The Revision Of Vision: Photographs From The Institute Of Design During The Harry Callahan-aaron Siskind Years

Imprint: Chicago, IL, Stephen Daiter Gallery, 2010
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 87 pages. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. None of the copies was sold to the public. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Adam Holtzman: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors. Essay and Notes by Stephen Daiter. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of Art Basel held in Basel, Switzerland from June 16-20, 2010. Presents "The Revision of Vision: Photographs From The Institute of Design During The Harry Callahan-Aaron Siskind Years". The sequel and companion volume to "Teachers of The New Bauhaus". Some of the finest and most representative images of the Institute of Design during one of its most productive periods, the so-called Harry Callahan/Aaron Siskind Years. The title comes from S. I. Hayakawa, who asserted that "the language of vision determines, perhaps even more subtly and thoroughly than verbal language, the structure of our consciousness. To see in limited modes of vision is not to see at all". Hence the need for a "re-vision of vision", which became the mantra of the Institute of Design. The latter offered the most important and influential photography program in the United States from the 1930's through the 1960's. No other photography school or program since then has matched let alone surpassed the achievement of the school and its enduring influence. Few photographs have been produced with such spirit of innovation and adventure, formal experimentation, and sheer joy in the act of creating images that no one has ever seen before. Some of the photographers represented in the Catalog are a Who's Who of 20th-century photography: Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Ray Metzker, Marvin E. Newman, and Joseph Sterling as well as their guiding lights, Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Less well-known but no less accomplished are Joseph D. Jachna, Thomas Knudtson, William Larson, Art Sinsabaugh, and Charles Swedlund, among others. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This Exhibition Catalog was not sold to the public. It was given as a keepsake/souvenir to Art Basel buyer/collectors only. A rare copy thus. 57 plates. Some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO "THIS WAS THE PHOTO LEAGUE", BARBARA CRANE, YASUHIRO ISHIMOTO, MARVIN NEWMAN, AARON SISKIND, AND JOSEPH STERLING TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Young At Heart: Selections From The John Cleary Kid Collection

Imprint: Chicago, IL, Stephen Daiter Gallery, 2018
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 50 pages. Exhibition Catalog. One of the most beautiful art photography catalogs ever published in our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Stephen Daiter Gallery: Oversize-volume format. Wraparound pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of 20th-century photography. Introduction by John S. Parsley. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago between June and August 2018. Presents "Young At Heart: Selections From The John Cleary Kid Collection". Vintage prints, beautifully reproduced, of kid photographs by some of the greatest names in photography of the 20th century. Classic photographs by Berenice Abbott, Helen Levitt, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Eugene Richards, Sabine Weiss, Lou Stoumen, Louis Stettner, Garry Winogrand, Duane Michals, Ruth Orkin, Leon Levinstein, and Margaret Bourke-White, among others, give a pretty good idea of the world-class quality - and significance - of the 750 photographs that John Cleary amassed over decades of collecting he devoted single-mindedly to children, that most appealing and heartbreaking of images (therefore prone to sentimentality and bathos). As these selections show, Cleary was well aware of the pitfalls, collected with discriminating taste and with an eye, as it were, for their genuine value to posterity. This is only the second memorial book-tribute to John Cleary and his legendary "Kid Collection". "Where You Gonna Get Another One: Photographs From The John Cleary Kid Collection", privately published in a Limited Edition of 300 copies in 2008, promptly vanished, and is now impossible to find. An absolute "must-have" title for John Cleary and photography book collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. Some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. .

Dallesandro, Joe (Subject) & Bruce of Los Angeles (A.K.A. Bruce of LA)
Joe Dallesandro: Nude Black-and-white Photograph By Bruce Of Los Angeles

Imprint: Los Angeles, CA, Bruce Of Los Angeles
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Joe Dallesandro collectible item. An original vintage photographic print of the young model/actor, as photographed by Bruce of Los Angeles. The print measures 8 X 10 inches and is encased in an archival thick plastic sheet reinforced with hard board backing. It shows Dallesandro at the absolute peak of his beauty: Young, handsome, and buffed. He is shown in the Classical supine/"lying-back" position, with his erect penis in a revealing angle. This is not a digital print or a later, contemporary print, but was printed directly from the original negative during Bruce of LA's lifetime. It is very beautifully developed, with great clarity and subtle contrasts, on Double-Weight Fiber photographic paper, the paper Bruce of LA used in his last years. "Coupled with the fact that it is unstamped but retains its white borders, it dates back to Bruce's lifetime rather than the later Kensington Road Era. Because this is one of the more erotic poses from Bruce's single session with Joe Dallesandro, it is a rare print in this large size and format" (Reed Massengill). Joe Dallesandro remains the cult icon/figure of Warhol's ground-breaking underground films, whose aesthetics and style anticipate by almost fifty years the deliberately crude and gritty sex films that appear routinely online today. Before he was discovered and turned into his very own superstar by Warhol, Joe Dallesandro was the muse of the great male-nude photographers. But it was Bruce of Los Angeles who was the very first to photograph him, in exactly one session. Warhol avidly collected all of the so-called "physique magazines". After his Warhol breakthrough, Dallesandro was photographed by Duane Michals, Jack Mitchell, Francesco Scavullo, and Richard Avedon, among many other mainstream photographers. The Avedon prints are proudly displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is the genuine article, an absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Joe Dallesandro collectors. This is an original vintage photographic print, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in metallic-silver pen-marker in front by the model/actor: "XXX Joe Dallesandro". The three X's stand for "love", of course, and is quite special as such. The recipient, Reed Massengill, is the leading authority on male erotic photography in America. According to Massengill, Dallesandro told him that he does not sign his "fully-erect" poses, making an exception in the case of a few of Massengill's print copies. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: A collection of Dallesandro memorabilia (publicity stills, magazine covers, film outtakes; not one of them an original print) available online commands $7500. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the iconic American model/actors of the 20th century. A fine collectible print. Brother, I'm Dying

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 272 pages. The author's debut memoir. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Edwidge Danticat's "Brother, I'm Dying". Her first memoir. Portions of the book originally appeared in The New Yorker Magazine to critical acclaim. The title says it all: "In 2004, Danticat's uncle Joseph, a pastor in poor health at 81, fled Haiti after his church was burned, only to die under appalling circumstances in Florida's Krome Detention Center. Danticat vividly evokes the volatile Port-au-Prince neighborhood she called home after her parents emigrated to America and left her in the loving care of Joseph, her father's brother. She chronicles her uncle's experiences and the throat cancer that claimed his ability to speak as well as her parents' lives in New York before and after she was reunited with them. Haiti's bloody history and turmoil form her narrative's molten core while voice becomes its leitmotif. In a shattering yet redemptive manifestation of life's cycle, as Danticat's uncle enters his final days, her own father is slowly silenced by lung cancer, and she awaits the birth of her daughter. This meticulously crafted, deeply felt remembrance is an homage to one remarkable family and all who persevere, seeking justice and channeling love" (Donna Seaman). Every book by Edwidge Danticat is quietly enthralling. This harrowing tale is no exception. It blows away the shallow and self-indulgent life stories of her fellow American writers, and deserves to be read by anyone who still cares about writing as literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Edwidge Danticat collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Edwidge Danticat. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the lovely 2009 Brooklyn Book Festival Bookmark (it shows and describes Danticat) during which event her signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy with Souvenir Danticat Bookmark of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist At Work

Imprint: Princeton, NJ, Princeton University Press, 2010
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 190 pages. Collection of essays on subject. One of the best books on American immigrant literature ever written. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Edwidge Danticat's "Create Dangerously". Her Princeton University Lectures in their final published form. The title is from the famous essay by Albert Camus. "Locates the inimitable power of truth. Authorship becomes an act of subversion when one's words might be read and acted on by someone risking his or her life if only to read them. Danticat reminds us that, in a cruel twist of fate, her native Haiti gained independence in a bloody slave uprising, not long after the United States did: Our ties, usually unexamined, run painfully deep. Whether eulogizing her family, writing on leading journalist Jean Dominique's assassination and exiled author Marie Vieux-Chauvet, or discussing Madison Avenue Primitive Jean-Michel Basquiat, Danticat documents what it means for an immigrant writer to create dangerously for immigrant readers who read dangerously, awakened and no longer participants in a culture of historical amnesia" (Publishers Weekly). Every book by Edwidge Danticat is quietly enthralling. It blows away the shallow and self-indulgent life stories of her fellow American writers, and deserves to be read by anyone who still cares about writing as literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Edwidge Danticat collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Edwidge Danticat. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 230 pages. Retrospective collection of essays. One of the greatest (and under-appreciated) books on art and culture in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Arthur C. Danto's "The State of The Art". The ground-breaking, inaugural collection from possibly the single most important art critic in America of our time. All of the themes that the prolific Danto has explored and written about since then, over the course of a long and brilliant career, are laid out in this book. "An art critic who weaves Nietzsche and Hegel into criticism is rare, but Danto turns out philosophically informed criticism with pungency and bite. Reminds us that most 20th-century art has been revolutionary or religious, viewed by its makers as a means of spiritual transformation. Skewers the fashionable and chic with critiques of Julian Schnabel, Jonathan Borofsky, and others. His send-ups are all the more devastating for being good-natured and philosophically anchored. Danto is equally interesting whether he is re-assessing famous masters (Chagall, Van Gogh, Durer) or unraveling contemporaries whom he admires (Robert Motherwell, Leon Golub) " (Publishers Weekly). Erudition, eclectic taste, and keen intellect are the hallmarks of Arthur C. Danto's writing, and they are deployed here, in full, magnetic force. An absolute "must-have" title for Arthur C. Danto collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, dated (before publication), and inscribed in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "New York, 4 Feb 1987, For Ben & Dorothy, In friendship, affection, gratitude, and pleasure, Arthur C. Danto". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The couple-recipients, who are named, are close friends of the author and among few recipients of an advance copy. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and pre-publication dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Darwin, Charles & Lincoln, Abraham (Subjects) & Gopnik, Adam (Author)
Angels And Ages: A Short Book About Darwin, Lincoln, And Modern Life

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 211 pages. The author's book-length account on subjects. One of the finest literary and intellectual achievements of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Adam Gopnik's "Angels And Ages: A Short Book About Darwin, Lincoln, And Modern Life". The best book - and Adam Gopnik's best book - published to celebrate the Bi-Centennial of both Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln. Linked essays on two great, still-controversial, and still-relevant figures, who were born on the same day, February 12, 1809. "In the year of Darwin's and Lincoln's Bi-Centennial, Gopnik finds parallels of cultural impact between the men, born on the same day in 1809, seeing them as twin exemplars of modernity. Gopnik notes that it is not what they have in common with each other that matters. It is what they have in common with us. And that commonality lies in the modern way of speaking (plain English) and thinking (scientific and liberal). Gopnik underscores the importance of eloquence in spreading new ideas, and his notion that Lincoln and Darwin exemplify the modern predicament, that human beings must live in the space between what we know and what we feel, is resonant" (Publishers Weekly). The criticism leveled against Gopnik's account is that the connection between Lincoln and Darwin is tenuous at best, and that his effort to make one is a stretch. We need to respond to the stupidity of such criticism as plainly as possible: There is no obvious connection whatsoever between Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln. Gopnik's achievement is precisely to find and make the connection where none previously existed, enabling us to see two men who never met in a whole new light, and making it impossible to dismiss their connection from hereon. Forget the solemn and adoring 500-page books on Darwin and Lincoln that have been published in 2009, tedious "scholarship" that goes over the same ground previous books have already trod. Adam Gopnik's book is all you need to see these two towering modern figures again, with fresh eyes, with intelligence, and with insight, that rare ability to make connections where none appear to exist. An absolute "must-have" title for Adam Gopnik, Charles Darwin, and Abraham Lincoln collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by Adam Gopnik. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed and publication-year dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Daval, Jean-Luc
Photography: History Of An Art

Imprint: New York City, NY, Rizzoli, 1982
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 268 pages. Pioneering and illuminating account on subject. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An elegant production by Rizzoli: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors. Text by Jean-Luc Daval. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jean-Luc Daval's "Photography: History of An Art". One of the most absorbing cultural histories ever written on an inexhaustible subject. With its emphasis on the evolution of photography in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the story of photography's growth as a medium of creative expression is told by the great Jean-Luc Daval with panache and meticulous attention to detail. His critical guidepost is Walter Benjamin, the first great critic of photography, who acutely observed that: "Subtle distinctions have been pointlessly made in the effort to decide whether or not photography is an art. What has not been asked is whether this very invention has not transformed the whole character of art itself" (Walter Benjamin, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction"). Benjamin ultimately saw photography as the new art, not necessarily for the better, because it signalled the complete triumph of technology over the "handmade" work of art, the decisive displacement by an infinitely reproducible medium of any established art form. Daval's account is much more sympathetic and argues for the considerable and, in some instances, truly remarkable artistic breakthroughs that were achieved through photography. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Zurich, Switzerland to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Lynn Davis' "Bodywork: 1978-1985". An important, not just an incidental, body of work in the photographer's oeuvre: Her collection of formal human-figure studies, taken over a period of seven years. Classical, sculptural, and often abstract, in contrast to the grittier, more realistic, and more explicit style of many contemporary photographers, these arresting images emphasize the aesthetic appeal of the perfect human body. Consistent with her now-considerable body of work, it is not an exaggeration to say that Lynn Davis sees the beauty that our world has to offer with a sense of awe and majesty. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 160 pages. Retrospective collection of landscape and landmark photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Lynn Davis' "Monument". Her ambitious attempt to leave her mark on the landscape and landmark genre. She has succeeded brilliantly. The concept behind the collection is that a monument is a natural or a man-made structure whose motif is ascension. The greatest landmarks by Man, as Lynn Davis sees and presents them, rival, and often surpass, those of Nature, as breathtaking as the latter can be. Her images have a global reach: Egypt, Australia, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Yemen, Lebanon, Greenland, and the United States. They include the Pyramid of Giza, Buddhist temples, the icebergs of Greenland, among other stupendous pinnacles of Nature and Man. "Davis articulates both the omnipotent forces of Nature and the most resolute building endeavors ever undertaken by Man. Davis's aesthetic is cool and refined; her sparse composition, and controlled modeling of light evoke solitude and contemplation" (Publisher's blurb). Davis, Claire
Winter Range

Imprint: New York City, NY, Picador, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 262 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most notable literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Claire Davis' "Winter Range". The New West, the setting for an old-fashioned power struggle in Davis' entrancing debut. "Sheriff Ike Parsons, 42 and married to fiery redhead Pattiann, patiently patrols a small Montana town whose cattle outnumber its residents. Pattiann, who always loved the ranching life, was reluctant to settle into her role as a townie's wife, and is bitter over her father's decision to pass on the family ranch to her younger brother. It seems a modern Western woman is powerless, except in the sexual realm, which Pattiann discovered as a rebellious, promiscuous teen. Chas Stubblefield was one of the many boys she drunkenly coupled with in her youth, and 16 years later, when Chas comes to her for sympathy, she fools herself into thinking that she and the down-and-out rancher might still strike sparks. A lonely bachelor, Chas lacks business savvy and can't afford enough feed for his livestock during a particularly harsh winter. Compassionate (but ignorant of Chas' past with Pattiann), Ike offers to help Chas, fully expecting the stubborn, explosive man to swallow his pride. Chas' situation is indeed horrifying: His cattle are already dead or starving, and bankrupt Chas lives off the meat. Ike conceives a plan to mercy-kill the surviving animals, provoking Chas, now helpless to stop the law from taking everything he owns, to settle the score, even if it means hurting the woman he loves. Crisp details establish place and characters with authoritative clarity. As the characterization deepens, so do the suspense and the reader's empathy for decent people trapped by human flaws and fate. The narrative, moving surefootedly toward its denouement, raises serious questions about the law, love, and ethics in a tough rural community. With prose as crystalline and clean as snow on the Montana prairie, Davis establishes herself as a writer to watch" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Claire Davis collectors. This Autographed Copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Claire Davis. It is signed directly and vertically (as is her custom) on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. Dawkins, Richard
The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution

Imprint: New York City, NY, Free Press, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 470 pages. The author's book-length account on subject. One of the best books ever written on evolution in particular and science in general. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Richard Dawkins' "The Greatest Show On Earth". A meticulous and accessible account on a subject that he celebrates (more than argues) as indisputable scientific fact. The controversial author of "The God Delusion" "explains that all of his previous books have naively assumed the fact of evolution, which meant that he never got around to laying out the evidence that it is true. This shouldn't be too surprising: Science is an edifice of tested assumptions, and just as physicists must assume the truth of gravity before moving on to quantum mechanics, so do biologists depend on the reality of evolution. It's the theory that makes every other theory possible. Yet Dawkins also came to realize that a disturbingly large percentage of the American and British public didn't share his enthusiasm for evolution. In fact, they actively abhorred the idea, since it seemed to contradict the Bible and diminish the role of God. While it might fail as a work of persuasive rhetoric (Dawkins is too angry and acerbic to convince his opponents), it succeeds as an encyclopedic summary of evolutionary biology. If Charles Darwin walked into a 21st-century bookstore and wanted to know how his theory had fared, this is the book he should pick up. Dawkins remains a superb translator of complex scientific concepts. It doesn't matter if he's spinning metaphors for the fossil record (like a spy camera in a murder trial) or deftly explaining the method by which scientists measure the genetic difference between distinct species. He has a way of making the drollest details feel like a revelation. Even if one already believes in the survival of the fittest, there is something thrilling about learning that the hoof of a horse is homologous to the fingernail of the human middle finger or that some dinosaurs had a second brain of ganglion cells in their pelvis, which helped compensate for the tiny brain in their head. There is grandeur in this view of life" (Jonah Lehrer). An absolute "must-have" title for Richard Dawkins collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. Holland Day". The artist/photographer's finest and most representative images. Brings the beautiful and controversial work of F. Holland Day back to the serious attention of the international audience, which was both thrilled and scandalized by the very same images in 1900. F. Holland Day was born in South Dedham, Massachusetts into a family of wealth and social responsibility. By 1900 he was, with Alfred Stieglitz, the most influential champion and practitioner of art photography in America and Europe. Because of the challenging nature of much of his subject matter (sacred religious themes, adult male nude figures), Day enjoyed a slightly edgier and more heightened reputation at the time. Influenced by William Morris, he established a publishing house in Boston in 1893, encouraged young and unusual authors, among them Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde, and was, in effect, a pioneer of what we would today call "networking", in the most positive sense of the word. At the same time, he became ever more involved in photography, sometimes using as models the talented immigrants whose education he sponsored, most notably the Lebanese immigrant/mystic writer-to-be Kahlil Gibran, who was an angelic-looking and handsome man. In 1904, Day's studio burned down, destroying his negatives. The photographs in museums today are from Day's home or friends' collections, especially Stieglitz and the British photographer Frederick Evans. A long-overdue critical re-assessment. An absolute "must-have" title for F. Holland Day collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody and James Crump: Oversize-volume format. Yellow cloth boards with black design and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. The cover is adapted from Aubrey Beardsley's original cover design for Oscar Wilde's "Salome". Photographs by F. Holland Day. Essay, "Suffering The Ideal", by James Crump. Printed in four colors with varnish on wood-free stock paper to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. In clear glassine DJ, as issued. Presents F. Holland Day's "Suffering The Ideal". Some of the finest and most representative works by F. Holland Day, one of the medium's finest Pictorialists, who went on to become one of its seminal Modernists. F. Holland Day saw art as a medium for both eroticism and mysticism. In his most ethereal photographs, he combined both, evoking the enduring glory of the past and his own historically vulnerable "sentimentality", the euphemism at the time for homosexuality ("straight" men were described as "earthy" and "sensual" while homosexuals were "idealistic" and "sentimental"). Crump examines F. Holland Day's beginnings, evolution, and continuing relevance. Even though contemporary male erotic art photography is no longer "sentimental", the photographer has remained an influence on figures like John Dugdale and Bill Jacobson, to name just two contemporary artists. F. Holland Day's goal was self-transcendence whereas many of his descendants today just want to have fun. Among the most famous portraits is that of the angelically handsome Khalil Gibran, who remains a cult figure among followers of mystical teachings. "The first great photographer of the male nude" (Jack Woody). An absolute "must-have" title for F. Holland Day collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online are in bad condition: Remainder-marked, the glassine DJ heavily rubbed, and the internal pages soiled. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 86 color plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER F. HOLLAND DAY TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0944092330.

Cristina De Middel "self Publish, Be Happy" Volume 3: Artist Book

Imprint: London, England, Self Publish/Be Happy Book Club, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 60 pages. Artist Book. Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition that was published simultaneously with it. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Cristina De Middel: Regular-sized volume format. Red hard boards with black spine and hand-painted art on the cover, as issued. Each copy has unique, graffiti-inspired art on the cover. Color photographs by Cristina De Middel. "Add-ins" (the USCIS Immigration Form and New York Jets Game Card) inserted within the book. 7 X 5 inch original color print appended at the back. Printed on thick archival stock paper in London to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Cristina De Middel's Contribution to the "Self Publish, Be Happy" Series. Challenges the archetype of street photography. "Embodying the notion of the American Dream and the tingling sensation of collective fascination with such an iconic place, the book is something of an enigma and hints at a multilayered story. Through signifiers and visual clues, the viewer is invited to piece together the sum of its parts, as in a game or a puzzle" (Publisher's blurb). The puzzle, if it is one, is the immigrant dream of a stable, prosperous, and fulfilling life, which is also the American Dream. That an idealized America is the physical epicenter of this global dream (despite its undeniable racial, social, and cultural problems, which street photography at its best often captures) is not America's fault. Surely, there is a reason that no one in the world dreams of moving to Russia or China as an immigrant. All of Cristina De Middel's Artist Books are tender, loving, and yet unflinching re-imaginations of nationalist, immigrant-internationalist, and all other utopian dreams. Although we may find her Artist Books funny and parodistic, they are, strictly speaking, neither humor nor parody. Cristina De Middel celebrates the greatest ideas and ideals, however imperfect, that people everywhere believe in, live by, and if necessary, are also willing to die for: Nationalism (nation/states that people now identify with as the very essence of their being, whether they be American, Jewish, or Zambian), the United Nations (the most abstract and unrealizable of ideals), and socially conscious, humane societies. Hers is a hopeful vision rather than a nihilistic or skeptical one, and as such, is very rare indeed among all-knowing contemporary artists. An absolute "must-have" title for Cristina De Middel collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 250 copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Cristina De Middel. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Aside from the "add-ins" (the USCIS Immigration Form and New York Jets Game Card) that are randomly inserted within the book, it comes with a 7 X 5 inch color print that is appended at the back and is available only with the Limited Edition. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 60 color plates, 1 original color print. Cristina De Middel's "The Afronauts" is widely regarded as one of the greatest photography books of our time. Party

Imprint: London, England, RM/Archive Of Modern Conflict, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 200 pages. Artist Book. Limited Edition of 1715 copies, as stated. This October 2013 First Edition sold out before publication and is now rare. A brilliant production by Cristina De Middel: Small-size volume format, a neat pocket book that fits in the palm of your hand. The "Little Red Book" ("Quitonasto form Chanmair Mao Tungsest", or "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tsetung" rendered in scrambled letters for copyright protection) produced as a facsimile of the original pocket book, with red plastic covers and gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Chairman Mao, selected and reproduced (in English translation) by Cristina De Middel. Photographs by Cristina De Middel. They are inserted between pages, tipped-in at the spine rather than on the page. Printed on archival stock paper in Spain to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Cristina De Middel's "Party". Her Artist Book rendition of The Little Red Book. "A portrait of present-day China modeled on Mao Tse Tung's Red Book. De Middel uses the structure of Mao's book (as well as its iconic design) to create a photo-narrative interspersed with adapted quotations from Mao" (Publisher's blurb). "I decided to adapt this historic political statement by censoring and hiding the parts of the text that are no longer in force and highlighting some other re-designed sentences that, for me, form a more accurate portrait of the People's Republic of China in the 21st century" (Cristina De Middel). For De Middel, the Chinese Communist Party's greatest failing may be that it put too much emphasis on "Communist" (that is to say, discipline, order, and punishment) and not enough on "party" (that is to say, celebration, euphoria, and happiness). She proposes to re-write Chinese history by adapting Chairman Mao's vision to contemporary China's "market-driven", more open, and perhaps happier society. All of Cristina De Middel's Artist Books are tender, loving yet unflinching re-imaginations of nationalist, immigrant-internationalist, and all other utopian dreams, "The Afronauts" (2012) being her most beautiful realization. Although we may find her Artist Books funny and parodistic, they are, strictly speaking, neither humor nor parody. They are, instead, ironic yet serious at the same time: Cristina De Middel celebrates the greatest ideas and ideals, however imperfect, that people everywhere believe in, live by, and if necessary, are also willing to die for: Nationalism (nation/states that people now identify with as the very essence of their being, whether they be American, Jewish, or Zambian), the United Nations (the most abstract and unrealizable of ideals), and socially conscious, humane societies. Hers is a hopeful vision rather than a nihilistic or skeptical one, and as such, is very rare indeed among all-knowing contemporary artists. An absolute "must-have" title for Cristina De Middel collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 1715 copies, indicated as such on the Copyright Page (October 2013 Edition). It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Cristina De Middel. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great Artist Book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. The Afronauts: The Editions Bessard Limited Edition

Imprint: Paris, France, Editions Bessard, 2014
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 38 pages. New Rendition/Edition of the artist/photographer's classic. Limited Edition of 300 numbered copies. Published as Volume 12 of Editions Bessard's "Zine Collection" Photography Book Series. Comes with an original color print (whereas the 2012 First Edition does NOT). The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Cristina De Middel: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with overlay, as issued. Photographs by Cristina De Middel. 5.5 X 6 inch original color print tipped-in. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in France to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents Cristina De Middel's "The Afronauts". After all is said and done, her breakthrough and her masterpiece. "Zambia 1964: The eccentric schoolteacher Edward Makuka Nkoloso single-handedly started a space program to put the first African on the moon, thereby joining the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Due to a lack of funding, from both the Zambian Government and the UN, and because one of the astronauts, a teenage girl, got pregnant, the program came to an early end. It is a lesser-known part of an African history that has been dominated by wars, violence, and hunger". The abortive Zambia Astronaut Project becomes the basis for Cristina De Middel's evocatively beautiful images fifty years later. "The images are beautiful and the story is pleasant at a first level. But it is built on the fact that nobody believes that Africa will ever reach the moon. It hides a very subtle critique to our position towards the whole continent and our prejudices" (Cristina De Middel). Why, indeed, can't Africans dream of going to the moon? Why should we identify Africa with under-development and barbarism? Among Cristina De Middel's re-imaginations of utopian dreams, "The Afronauts" (2012) is her most beautiful realization. Cristina De Middel celebrates the greatest ideas and ideals, however imperfect (and at times, contradictory), that people everywhere believe in, live by, and if necessary, are also willing to die for: Nationalism (nation/states that people now identify with as the very essence of their being, whether they be American, Jewish, or Zambian), the United Nations (the most abstract and unrealizable of ideals), and socially conscious, humane societies. Hers is a hopeful vision rather than a nihilistic or skeptical one, and as such, is very rare indeed among contemporary artists. An absolute "must-have" title for Cristina De Middel collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 300 copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page. It comes with a beautiful 5.5 X 6 inch original color print, tipped into the Front Limitation Page, that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by Cristina De Middel. Because the signed print is tipped-in on the very first page (rather than laid-in its own sleeve), De Middel did not need to sign the book itself. This title is a contemporary photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the 2012 First Edition available online command as much as $4000, perhaps rightly so. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 30 color plates, 1 original color print. Cristina De Middel's "The Afronauts" is widely regarded as one of the greatest photography books of our time. Garden Of Beasts: A Novel Of Berlin 1936

Imprint: New York City, NY, Simon & Schuster, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 405 pages. The author's 19th novel. One of Jeffery Deaver's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jeffery Deaver's "Garden of Beasts". A delicious, unputdownable tale set in Nazi Berlin. The book's hero is a mob hit man, Paul Schumann, who is nabbed in the act in New York City, but given an alternative to the electric chair: Go to Berlin undercover, as a journalist writing about the upcoming Olympics, in order to assassinate Colonel Reinhard Ernst, the chief architect of Hitler's militarization. "Deaver weaves three manhunts, Paul after his target, Kohl after Paul, and the Nazi hierarchy after Paul, with a deft hand, bringing to frightening life the Berlin of 1936, a city on the brink of madness. Top Nazis, including Hitler, Himmler, and Goring, make colorful cameos, but it's the smart, shaded-gray characterizations of the principals that anchor the exciting plot. An affecting love affair between Paul and his German landlady goes in surprising directions, as do the main plot lines, which move outside Berlin as heroes become villains and vice versa. This is prime Deaver, which means prime entertainment" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Jeffery Deaver collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jeffery Deaver. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Hard News

Imprint: New York City, NY, Doubleday/A Perfect Crime Book, 1991
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 310 pages. The author's breakthrough third novel. One of Jeffery Deaver's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Jeffery Deaver's "Hard News". Perhaps his best, most fully satisfying book. A crime novel in which Rune, the female protagonist, is erratic, unreliable, and otherwise deeply flawed, and the main antagonist comes across (in the end, after one brilliant twist after another) as more humane and sympathetic than the news-media journalists who hound him (hence the title), who are irredeemably corrupt, and are desperately hiding something diabolical. "Deaver's background as a journalist helps him to describe the ruthlessly competitive, back-stabbing caste system of network news, and to depict the tedium as well as the excitement a reporter experiences when breaking a major story. He writes with clarity, compassion, and intelligence, and with a decidedly humane slant" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Jeffery Deaver collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by the author: "11/11/92 To Ruth, from a Tovarish! Jeffery Deaver". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. A "Tovarish" is the Soviet-Era Russian term of endearment for comrade. It became popular among journalists and writers covering the former Soviet Union. So the recipient is unmistakably a fellow journalist/writer. This title is a late-modern classic of the thriller genre. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Plotted

Imprint: San Francisco, CA, PULP Books, 2015
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 126 pages. Collection of original maps, inspired by literary classics. One of the most beautiful literary-cum-art books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Andrew DeGraff's "Plotted". Interpretations of literary masterpieces as dazzling maps. "Offers readers a new way of looking at their favorite fictional worlds. Stunningly detailed artwork takes readers deep into the landscapes from 'The Odyssey', 'Hamlet', 'Pride And Prejudice', 'Invisible Man', 'A Wrinkle In Time', 'Watership Down', 'A Christmas Carol', and more. Provides a unique, new way of appreciating the lands of the human imagination" (Publisher's blurb). "Paired with essays by Daniel Harmon, these maps illuminate classic works of literature in fun and appealing new ways. Many of the stories depicted are from classic works of children's literature (such as 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' and 'A Wrinkle In Time'), and all are plotted intricately with vibrant colors. DeGraff also includes sophisticated renderings from the works of Shakespeare, Kafka, Borges, Homer, Austen, and Verne. Some representations are maps in the common sense: DeGraff tracing the movements of Odysseus around the Mediterranean, Scrooge around London, Hamlet through the rooms of Elsinore Castle. Some feature diagrams: The depiction of the Pequod from 'Moby Dick'. Others are more abstract: DeGraff plots the romantic courses of the characters of 'Pride And Prejudice' in an intertwined rollercoaster-like structure. Harmon's ruminations on these works add an additional dimension to the maps. A rewarding excursion across the literary landscape that will be cherished by map enthusiasts as well as bibliophiles" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Andrew DeGraff collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the artist's specially-designed bookplate by Andrew DeGraff. The latter is neatly pasted on the half-title page. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy (with signed bookplate) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: DeGraff did not make a single public appearance to launch the book. Deitrick, Kurt (Photographer) & Ashfield, David (Model/Subject)
David Ashfield: "fully Erect" Color Photograph By Kurt Deitrick

Imprint: Los Angeles, CA, Kurt Deitrick Studios, 1980
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare David Ashfield and Kurt Deitrick collectible item. An original vintage color photographic print of David Ashfield, photographed by Kurt Deitrick. David Ashfield was one of Kurt Deitrick's most celebrated models and one of the most popular male-nude models of the 1980's. The print measures 5 X 7 inches and is encased in an oversize thick protective plastic sheet. It shows the boyishly handsome, lean, muscular, and well-endowed David Ashfield at the peak of his beauty in one of his most beautiful poses, a full-frontal, fully erect shot. Why beautiful? According to Peter Hujar, the (still-very-controversial) erection is the human male body in its most beautiful state. It is the "middle" state between normal/"soft" and orgasm/"explosive", when the human male, not just the body, becomes "state-less", however fleetingly. This is not a digital print or a later, contemporary print but was printed directly from the original negatives in the 1980's, at the time of first publication. Beautifully developed, with great clarity and warm tones, on Kodak photographic paper. This is the genuine article, an absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for David Ashfield, Kurt Deitrick, and erotic art photography collectors. This original vintage color photographic print is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the iconic American male-nude models of the 20th century. A fine collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER KURT DEITRICK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Deitrick, Kurt (Photographer) & Unidentified Athlete/Model (Subject)
Male Nude: "athlete With White Sock" Color Photograph By Kurt Deitrick

Imprint: Los Angeles, CA, Kurt Deitrick Studios, 1986
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Kurt Deitrick and male erotic photography collectible item. An original vintage color photographic print of an unidentified blond athlete, as photographed by Kurt Deitrick. It is one of Deitrick's most (inadvertently) inspired male nudes ever. The print measures 5 X 7 inches and is encased in an oversize thick protective plastic sheet. It shows the handsome, hirsute yet clean-cut model in one of Deitrick's single most beautiful images. It is a conventional nude pose, except for one brilliant touch: His right foot is raised and his white sock is visible. It is unconscious on the part of the photographer that a male nude which shows a sock (just one, not the pair) alludes to two erotic elements: The single-letter difference between "sock" and "cock" and the almost-identical sound of "sock" and "suck". All three words have multiple meanings, the sexual ones being slang. This is not a digital print or a later, contemporary print but was printed directly from the original negatives in the 1980's, at the time of first publication. Beautifully developed, with great clarity and warm tones, on Kodak photographic paper. This is the genuine article, an absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Kurt Deitrick and male erotic art photography collectors. This original vintage color photographic print is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Blue cloth boards with tipped-in color photographic reproduction on the cover and titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez. Introduction by Sandra S. Phillips. Afterword Essay, "Home", by Richard Rodriguez. In transparent glassine DJ, as issued. Presents Eduardo Del Valle's and Mirta Gomez's "From The Ground Up". The work of an American photographer-couple of Cuban descent who will give the (insufferably boring and overrated) Bechers a run for their money. "The Cuban-born husband-and-wife team of Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez has worked collaboratively for thirty years, receiving international acclaim for their photographs of subjects in a state of flux. 'From The Ground Up' is a three-part photographic essay focusing on the metamorphosis of the vernacular architecture in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. This fascinating study, comprising photographs taken from the mid-1980's to the present, is surely the most extensive and comprehensive record of the design and evolution of this region's built structures. Del Valle and Gomez are recipients of Guggenheim, Cintas, and NEA fellowships in photography. Their work has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad, and is in the Permanent Collections of The Museum of Modern Art New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Brooklyn Museum" (Chris Pichler). The great photographer Lewis Baltz, who is best-known for his desolate urban landscape work, once referred to the work of photographers like Hamish Fulton, Paul Hill, Capability Brown, Humphrey Repton, and Richard Long as "land artists", photographers who have a genuine connection with the land in a way that their predecessors (like Ansel Adams) did not. These are very different artist/photographers but what unites them all is a love of the land and its structures, whose primary characteristics are flux, change, metamorphosis, and ultimately, evolution. Ansel Adams sought to capture majesty through breathtaking photographs of scenic landscapes and stunning landmarks. What is uniquely and profoundly moving about the "land artists" is a search not for static and immutable Essences but for Reality in all its concreteness, ruin, and beauty. They do not take pretty pictures; they take beautifully honest pictures. Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez are worthy "land artists" in this great late-modern tradition. "Beautifully made color photography and an achievement of enormous richness. Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez have followed one thread with great tenacity. I don't know of any other body of work quite like it" (John Szarkowski). An absolute "must-have" title for Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen on the title page by Eduardo Del Valle and Mirta Gomez. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce signed copy thus. 82 color plates. Two of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EDUARDO DEL VALLE AND MIRTA GOMEZ TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). DeLillo, Don
Cosmopolis

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 209 pages. The author's thirteenth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Don DeLillo's "Cosmopolis". The first serious literary attempt to come to terms with the so-called "dotcom bubble" financial debacle at the turn of the 21st century. It was the precursor that eventually led to the sub-prime mortgage global meltdown of the first decade, whose after-shocks will reverberate for a long time to come. Takes place entirely in one day as Packer, the protagonist, gradually then volcanically unravels while he is driven across Manhattan to get a haircut, a dramatic "set-up" only DeLillo could pull off convincingly. The novel is ultimately an extended meditation on what it means to be human in an inhuman Digital Age. Since DeLillo's allegorical novel is, as expected, scathing and ruminates a good deal, the novel has received some of the most mixed reviews of his long and brilliant career, a misunderstanding on the part of an audience and critics rather than a shortcoming on DeLillo's part, whose target is always on the mark. If only die-hard Don DeLillo admirers read this novel, it would be a shame because the writer always has something arresting and important to say, in exquisite language that few other living American writers possess today. The novel is dedicated to Paul Auster, who has dwelled on the dark side of the American Dream in his own work. The basis of the fine film adaptation by David Cronenberg, with Robert Pattinson in the lead role. This comes with a pristine copy of the film version on Blu-ray. An absolute "must-have" title for Don DeLillo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Don DeLillo. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Program, "Traffic", published to commemorate the one-time-only event held at the Steppenwolf Theatre Chicago, during which the author performed an excerpt of "Cosmopolis" with two Steppenwolf actors. The Souvenir contains a full-page account by DeLillo on how he came to write his novel, which has not appeared in published form anywhere else. This also comes with a pristine copy of the film version on Blu-ray. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: DeLillo seldom does public signings, and limits the number of books he signs when he does. Most signed copies are pre-signed through the publisher on a tipped-in page, which does not have the same collectible value. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Regarded by the literary critic Harold Bloom as one of the canonical writers of the 20th century. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize in 1999, the first American writer to be so honored, among numerous other literary prizes. "Underworld" was selected as the second most important work of American fiction of the last 25 years by The New York Times panel of writers, editors, and critics. "Libra" and "White Noise" were included in the Top 20 list. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DON DELILLO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0743244249.

DeLillo, Don
Falling Man

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 246 pages. The author's fourteenth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The wraparound DJ design utilizes the famous photograph of the Twin Towers, still standing tall, surrounded by clouds. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Don DeLillo's "Falling Man". Another DeLillo masterpiece. The title alludes to the often-suppressed photograph of the man who, rather than be engulfed in flames, jumped to his death from one of the Twin Towers on 9/11. DeLillo vividly tells the aftermath through what happens to one of the imaginary survivors, Keith Neudecker. He then "rewinds" at the end and takes the reader back inside the Twin Towers as the planes strike the buildings, one of the most stunningly imagined endings about Apocalypse Now/The End ever written. "Through all the terror, fire, and smoke, DeLillo's voice is steady as a metronome, recounting exactly what happens to Keith as he sees friends and co-workers maimed and dead, navigates the stairs, and, ultimately, is saved. Though several post-9/11 novels have been written, not one of them is as compellingly true, faultlessly conceived, and beautifully written as this novel" (Valerie Ryan). And there are at least two important novels, among other homages, memorials, and other artistic gestures thus far on 9/11: Ian McEwan's "Saturday" and Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close", both published in 2005. Still, DeLillo's connection to 9/11 goes way back: To 1977, with "Players", giving his new book a fuller retrospective power than either McEwan or Foer. The prophetic line in "Players" is eerie: "The towers didn't seem permanent. They remained concepts, no less transient for all their bulk than some routine distortion of light" (Don DeLillo). An absolute "must-have" title for Don DeLillo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Don DeLillo. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. DeLillo, Don
Running Dog

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1978
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 250 pages. The author's sixth novel. One of the greatest American novels of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Don DeLillo's "Running Dog". A beautifully written and wise novel. "Don DeLillo has, as they used to say, class. He is original, versatile, and in his disdain of last year's emotional guarantees, fastidious. Into our technology-riddled world and daily lives, he reads the sinister ambiguities, the floating ugliness of America's recent history" (John Updike). The fastidious Updike wrote that in 1978, and with characteristic perceptiveness, identified DeLillo's themes as a writer. DeLillo's body of work has since grown significantly in quantity and quality. In his case, quantity is quality, as each new DeLillo novel challenges and rewards the discriminating reader as few American writers can. "The writer is the person who stands outside society, independent of affiliation and independent of influence. The writer is the man or woman who automatically takes a stance against his or her government. There are so many temptations for American writers to become part of the system and part of the structure that now, more than ever, we have to resist. American writers ought to stand and live in the margins, and be more dangerous. Writers in repressive societies are considered dangerous. That's why so many of them are in jail" (Don DeLillo). An absolute "must-have" title for Don DeLillo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Don DeLillo. The Angel Esmeralda: Nine Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner & Company, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 215 pages. The author's debut collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Don DeLillo's "The Angel Esmeralda: Nine Stories". After a lifetime of superlative achievement, his very first short story collection. As has been pointed out, the subtitle, "Nine Stories", is a nod to J. D. Salinger's eponymous and only short story collection, suggesting a literary challenge by DeLillo, and that this may also be his only collection. "The richness of his work, the pleasures - intellectual, visceral, poetic, comic - are unrivalled. The connections he makes from the data of our lives, and the way he renders these connections into sly, steely, grieving song, remain incomparable. Writing that stretches and reinvigorates consciousness, that delivers them bravely to places of fresh feeling, and leads them thrillingly through the mysteries and moods of contemporary existence" (Sam Lipsyte). DeLillo, Don
The Body Artist

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 124 pages. The author's twelfth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Don DeLillo's "The Body Artist". Immediately after his monumental "Underworld", an exquisite and spare erotic novella. "Focusses on the relation between Eros and Thanatos, with the writer's inimitable keenness of insight and observation. At this stage of his career, a slender book is nothing less than an adventure for the capacious DeLillo. So is his willingness to risk sentimentality, to immerse us in personal rather than national traumas. A real, raw accomplishment" (James Marcus). Singled out by Susan Sontag (in "Where The Stress Falls") as DeLillo's most perfect achievement, joining the small shelf of American masterpiece-novellas that include Glenway Wescott's "The Pilgrim Hawk" (1940), Elizabeth Hardwick's "Sleepless Nights" (1979), and Rachel Ingalls' "Mrs. Caliban" (1982). Less is often, if not always, more. An absolute "must-have" title for Don DeLillo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Don DeLillo. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Don DeLillo's "Zero K". His magnanimous new novel, published in the year of his 80th birthday. It took him more than five years to write, and he has suggested that it may be his last. "The wisest, richest, funniest, and most moving novel in years from Don DeLillo: An ode to language, a meditation on death, and an embrace of life" (Publisher's blurb). "His bleak humor and edged insight, the alertness and vitality of his prose, the vast, poetic extrapolations are all evident. So is the visceral quickness and wit in the sentences. This is one of the constant pleasures of a DeLillo novel: The talk, the shop talk, the comic talk, the cosmic talk, the way the characters feel language, its sonics, the moral and emotional pressures" (Sam Lipsyte). Imprint: Los Angeles, CA, DML Classics, Inc., 1996
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Edison Denisov and The Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble collectible item. A pristine copy of the Classical Compact Disc (CD) recording of some of his greatest orchestral works, as performed by the legendary Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. "Sun of The Incas" (1964) also showcases a magnificent performance by the Russian soprano Natalia Zagorinskaya. The recording was made and issued in this Compact Disc only in 1996. It is now rare. Denisov's music is sublime. Once completely unknown in the West, Edison Denisov is now regarded as one of the most imaginative and innovative composers of the Soviet Era. One of his prescient admirers was Igor Stravinsky. His music banned as "non-conformist" and "degenerate" for much of his career, Denisov lived long enough to witness Russia's emancipation from Communist dictatorship, and just as long enough to despair over Yeltsin Era corruption. An uncompromising visionary to the bitter end, he re-settled in Paris, where he died in 1996, the year of this recording. An absolute "must-have" item for Edison Denisov collectors. This copy of the DML Classics Classical Compact Disc (CD) recording of Edison Denisov's orchestral music is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of this historic recording available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Let Virtue Be Your Guide: Photographs By Frances F. Denny

Imprint: Sante Fe, New Mexico, Radius Books, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 108 pages. Debut collection of color photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. A brilliant production by David Chickey: Oversize-volume format. Pink cloth boards, as issued. Photographs by Frances F. Denny. Original piece, "Primer", by Lisa Locascio. The latter beautifully complements the evocative portraits of contemporary descendants of the original Mayflower/Puritan settlers of America. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In integral protective plastic covers with white titles printed in front and on the spine, as issued. Presents Frances F. Denny's "Let Virtue Be Your Guide". Her award-winning sequence of portraits of women-descendants, and their surroundings, of the very first white settlers of America. "Examines the author's family and their deeply-rooted history as early settlers of New England (one ancestor, John Howland, was a deckhand aboard The Mayflower). Unearthing the idea of feminine virtue from the confines of its historical meaning, Denny's photographs of the women in her family have a watchful quality, as if she is defining for herself what it means to be a woman. Her subjects, and the domestic spaces they inhabit, together evoke a distinct and well-worn privilege. But Denny finds the places where seams pull apart, exposing the shifts occurring across generations of women. A search for meaning in heritage, a challenge to the notion of legacy, and the artist's reckoning with a traditional version of American femininity" (Publisher's blurb). The title is a nod to The Past, the modernized version of "Let Virtue Be A Guide To Thee" (1730), a series of books published during the Colonial Period, instruction manuals for women on needlepoint and other crafts. The work speaks for itself: Its luminous, understated palette draws you in, making you (somehow) feel at home. Even if you will always be an outsider to this self-contained world, Denny does not make you feel like an unwelcome tourist. An absolute "must-have" title for Frances F. Denny collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (two months before publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "April 1, 2016 Chicago Frances F. Denny". It is also very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on her Contribution by Lisa Locascio. It is signed directly on the pages themselves, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Exhibition Material of the event during which their signatures were obtained. This title is a contemporary photography classic. Adieu: To Emmanuel Levinas

Imprint: Palo Alto, CA, Stanford University Press, 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 156 pages. Collection of essays on ethics. His definitive statement on the subject. One of Jacques Derrida's greatest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as part of Stanford University's legendary "Meridian Crossing" Series and as a hardcover original only. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jacques Derrida's "Adieu: To Emmanuel Levinas" in a felicitous English translation. His ethics, inspired and moved by Emmanuel Levinas' exemplary personal life and philosophy on the profound implications of the "face-to-face" encounter. "Contains the speech given by Derrida at Emmanuel Levinas' funeral on December 27, 1995 and his contribution to a colloquium organized to mark the first anniversary of Levinas' death. For both thinkers, the word 'adieu' names a fundamental characteristic of human being: The salutation or benediction prior to all constative language (in certain circumstances, one can say adieu at the moment of meeting) and that given at the moment of separation, sometimes forever, as at the moment of death, it is also a-Dieu, for God or to God before and in any relation to the other. Extends his work on Levinas in previously unexplored directions via a radical re-reading of 'Totality and Infinity' and other texts, including the lesser-known talmudic readings. He argues that Levinas bequeaths to us an 'immense treatise of hospitality', a meditation on the welcome offered to the other. The conjunction of an ethics of pure prescription with the idea of an infinite and absolute hospitality confronts us with the most pressing political, juridical, and institutional concerns of our time. What is an ethics of hospitality? As always, Derrida raises these questions in the most explicit of terms, moving back and forth between philosophical argument and the political discussion of immigration laws, peace, the state of Israel, xenophobia, reminding us with every move that thinking is not a matter of neutralizing abstraction but a gesture of hospitality for what happens and still may happen" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Jacques Derrida collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JACQUES DERRIDA TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0804732671.

Derrida, Jacques (Author) & Fort, Jeffrey (Translator)
Copy, Archive, Signature: A Conversation On Photography

Imprint: Palo Alto, CA, Stanford University Press, 2010
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 112 pages. Posthumous translation of the author's transcribed commentary on subject. One of the most fascinating and illuminating texts on photography ever published. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. The book was first published in German and has not yet appeared in France (the conversation was conducted in French). Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original by a University Press. Without DJ, as issued. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jacques Derrida's "Copy, Archive, Signature: A Conversation On Photography " in a felicitous English translation. Reflections on photography, which represent an attempt to take up where Roland Barthes' seminal "Camera Lucida" leaves off. The book is best appreciated as a fruitful discussion, a tentative, promising, meandering, and frequently tantalizing beginning rather than The Last Word. An extremely prolific writer, Derrida did not pursue the insights in this one-off conversation any further mainly because he saw photography in the much larger context of "memory", going so far as to say that his real life-work has been as a "memorialist" (rather than thinker or philosopher). "Makes available for the first time in English, and for the first time in its entirety in any language, an important yet little-known Interview on photography that Jacques Derrida granted in 1992 to the German theorist of photography Hubertus von Amelunxen and the German literary and media theorist Michael Wetzel. Their conversation addresses questions of presence and its manufacture, the technicity of presentation, the volatility of the authorial subject, and the concept of memory. Derrida offers a penetrating intervention with regard to the distinctive nature of photography vis-a-vis related technologies such as cinema, television, and video. Questioning the all-too-facile divides between so-called old and new media, original and reproduction, analogue and digital modes of recording and presenting, he provides stimulating insights into the ways in which we think and speak about the photographic image today" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Jacques Derrida collectors. This title is a modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauty. Printed on pristine-whtie, thick uncoated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Wouter Deruytter's "Cowboy Code". The immensely talented Belgian photographer's homage to the American Cowboy and his way of life. The great American writer Annie Proulx ("Brokeback Mountain") has convincingly suggested that the cowboy may have a steady girlfriend or full-fledged wife, but his deepest bonds are with other cowboys. Wouter Deruytter studied with Nan Goldin, Duane Michals, and Bruce Weber, and has steadily gained a considerable reputation in Europe. This book was intended in part to gain recognition for him in the United States. "Well-known for his images of people in the masks and costumes of their identities, from the time-traveling duo McDermott & McGough to drag queens to circus performers, Deruytter has turned his attention to the American West. For the past three summers, he has been photographing cowboys and small town rodeos in Montana. The rodeo cowboy is an omnipresent image in American culture, a modern-day folk hero and the subject of plays, movies, television, novels and all the other arts. But in these photographs from small, non-commercial rodeos, Deruytter brings to light a more homemade image than what we have become accustomed to. Deruytter's cowboys are not one-dimensional anachronisms: They tell a great mythic tale but they also suggest several historical parallels and force us to remember vanishing things we like to think of as permanent American values. They carefully document the small-town rodeo and ultimately they exude a sensuality and youthful elegance these cowboys may not be aware of. These are eloquent and sensual images that bring to light another side of the cowboy myth in America" (John Wood). An absolute "must-have" title for Wouter Deruytter collectors. This copy is very boldly, elaborately, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the year of publication) in blue ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "Wouter Deruytter NYC 2000". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and publication-year dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 70 duotone plates. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WOUTER DERUYTTER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1892041340.

Knights Of The Impossible: "anachronism Abroad", "arabian Knights", "circus In Egypt", "transgenderism", And "brave In The West"

Imprint: Ostend, Belgium, Museum Of Modern Art Ostend PMMK, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 143 pages. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Wouter Deruytter: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Wouter Deruytter. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Belgium to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Museum of Modern Art in Ostend, Belgium in 1998. Presents Wouter Deruytter's "Knights of The Impossible". His most brilliant work, in five sequences: "Anachronism Abroad", "Arabian Knights", "Circus In Egypt", "Transgenderism", and "Brave In The West". Deruytter's work is about the quest for identity, a theme that was influenced by his mentors in Nan Goldin and Duane Michals. There is nothing terribly original about this idea, and we need to be reminded that the quest for personal identity is a quest for belonging, is inseparable from the idea of belonging to a particular community, whether it's the LGBTQ or the American Cowboy. What makes Deruytter's work fascinating is that he envisions the quest as fluid: Whether through disguise/concealment or revelation, reinvention/makeover or clinging to a set of ancient rites and rituals, momentary transformation (costume and makeup) or the committed cultivation of an eccentric lifestyle. He has no interest in photographing what is merely of passing interest ("interesting"). His commitment to his chosen subjects is complete, which is admirable considering that he is a restless traveller who wants to see as much as he can of the world. Still, he spent almost a decade chronicling the lives of the American artist couple, David McDermott and Peter McGough, who live as though the Modern Era never happened. He developed an attachment to Jem Jender, a transgender person, neither male nor female, but rather male AND female, effortlessly slipping back and forth between the two opposite poles of gender identity. He also spent successive summers photographing the American Cowboy, the real ones, living in harsh conditions. In the conformist, social-media world we live today, Deruytter celebrates his royal "Knights of The Impossible". An absolute "must-have" title for Wouter Deruytter collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in blue ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "To Polly Sunshine, Wouter Deruytter May '98". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. "Polly Sunshine" is not a real person, but rather the photographer's dedication to All Others, that is to say, everyone who embraces a different identity and dares to be different. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, publication-year dated, and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Desai, Kiran
Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard

Imprint: New York City, NY, Atlantic Monthly Press, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 209 pages. The author's debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The DJ design by Charles Rue Woods is splendid, utilizing an adaptation of traditional Indian figurative art by John Martinez. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Kiran Desai's "Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard". An unqualified pleasure. "A wild, sad, humorous story about the oldest son of an eccentric family in a small Indian village. Born at the moment a crash of thunder signals the end of a long, hot drought, Sampath grows into a disappointing young man. After he loses a job, Sampath's mother attempts to comfort him with a guava, but it explodes as Sampath is admiring its green coolness, compelling him to flee his family and village to an abandoned orchard, climb into a guava tree, and stay there" (Library Journal). "Lush and intricately imagined" (Salman Rushdie). Critical praise deemed Desai's beautifully written first outing worthy of comparison with the work of such giants as Salman Rushdie, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and Shashi Tharoor. If her name rings a bell, it's because it does: Kiran is the daughter of Anita Desai. An absolute "must-have" title for Kiran Desai collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Kiran Desai. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event during which her signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have all kinds of inexplicable flaws for a relatively new book: Creasing, soiling, tears, bumps, you name it even if the dealers themselves do not. Yet they are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Booker Prize in 2006 and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2007 for "The Inheritance of Loss". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy.
