Octavo. xii,308 pp. Full calf skillfully rebacked, with decoratively gilt-tooled spine, with two green lettering pieces, laid-down. Inside dentelles gilt, green coated endpapers, with bookplate on front pastedown. An attractive copy, with only slight darkening of spine and edges of boards. Two leaves have short tears at edges and, near the end, there is a shallow dampstain at the top edge of some pages, which does not affect text or illustrations; otherwise the interior is quite clean. Eight of the nine front wrappers from the original parts issue have been bound-in at the end, missing only the cover for number six, along with some of the advertisements, such as 2 (of 4) pp. of "Comic Rome advertiser no. 1, May 1851" and the 16 p. "Guild of Literature and Art. Prospectus of a new endowment" from the first issue, and a couple of other slips advertising a new work by Dickens and Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour. However, the advertisements are not bound in order. Comic versions of serious subjects, with appropriatly humorous illustrations, became popular beginning in the 1840s. Boston: Phillips, Sampson & Co., 1850. Second edition, published the same year as the first edition at New York. Beecher's first name is misspelled (Catherine) on the title-page. [4],296 pp. Octavo, brown cloth, all sides blocked in blind, gilt title at spine, endpapers printed with publisher's advertising. Bookplate of Eden B. Foster (American minister, 1813-1882) at front pastedown. A mostly clean copy, despite foxing to blanks and occasional, very light foxing in margins. The top fore-corners of two leaves are nicked, and a few corners are creased from folding. The cloth shows general light soiling and some spotting, and is worn through at heel, crown and corners; the fore-corners are gently bumped. The book is solid and and reasonably bright overall; very good plus. This book relates the very personal story of Delia Salter Bacon (1811-1859), who had been a student of Beecher's at her Hartford Female Seminary, and her friendship with Alexander MacWhorter, identified in the book as Mr. A., a Yale theological graduate ten years her junior. In 1847, after two years and no prospect of marriage between the two, Leonard Bacon, Delia's brother and pastor of New Haven's First Church (Congregational), brought misconduct charges against MacWhorter in the New Haven ministerial association. Although MacWhorter was acquitted by a narrow margin, both their reputations were tarnished. However, Delia Bacon was further damaged by Beecher's well-meaning attempt to defend her in print. She moved to England where she continued to write, founding the Baconian and group theories of Shakespeare authorship which still continue to this day, all the while withdrawing gradually from public life. She became increasingly mentally unstable as time passed; she died in 1859 at the Hartford (CT) Retreat for the insane. (NAW 1)., Very Good Stock number: 71965.
