BOECKH, Richard. DIE GESCHICHTLICHE ENTWICKELUNG DER AMTLICHEN STATISTIK DES PREUSSISCHEN STAATES. IM AUFTRAGE DES DIRECTORS DES KONIGLICHEN STATISTISCHEN BUREAUS HERRN. DR. ENGEL DARGESTELLT VON RICHARD BOECKH. Berlin: Konigliche Geheime Ober-Hofbuchdruckerei (R. Decker), 1863. [iv], 105 pp. 4to., original wrappers printed in black. Social statistician Edward Jarvis' copy, thoroughly annotated by him, with his signature to front wrapper. Front wrapper detached, light soil, slightly chipped; stab holes near spine indicate previous binding into boards or covers. Text age- toned at edges. Ex-library with usual markings. This history of statistics in Prussia was published for the private use of the Statistical Bureau and for the participants of the International Statistical Conference in Berlin. The Statistiche Seminar at the Royal Prussian Statisatical Bureau was founded in 1862 by Engel and Boeckh; it pioneered the establishment of methodological apparatus for censuses in Germany, teaching and organization of statistics, and population statistics in particular. Noted population statisticians Knapp, Brentano, Wurzberger and Kuczynski were associated with the Seminar. Edward Jarvis, born in Concord Mass. in 1803, was a Harvard educated physician, a specialist in the care of the insane, and statistician; he examined and criticized 1850 and 1860 US census figures, preparing an extensive mortality report for Congress. His annotations are primarily English translations of the printed German subheadings and margin notes.
