BURNEY, Frances
CECILIA, OR MEMOIRS OF AN HEIRESS
Imprint: 1782
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
[BURNEY, Frances]. CECILIA, OR MEMOIRS OF AN HEIRESS. By the author of Evelina. In five volumes. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son at the Mews-Gate, and T. Cadell in the Strand, 1782. First edition. Five 12mo. volumes. [ii],293;263;365;328;398 pp. Worn contemporary bindings of quarter calf with marbled sides, decorative rules gilt-stamped to spines. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey (1781-1859) in all volumes. In general, spines have darkened and are flaking in places; gilt- stamped spine numerals have dulled so that only one is still readable; and, only one volume retains its gilt-stamped black label on spine. In particular, the backstrip of Vol. 1 has a vertical split near the center, a chip at the crown, and has been glued down; its top board is nearly off and is attached by the sewing cords. Upper joints of Vols. 2 & 3 are starting. Text leaves show intermittent light foxing but are generally clean. One signature (B) in Vol. 2 is slightly sprung at the bottom. In Vol. 4, one leaf (E2, p. 99-100) is missing the bottom fore-corner (but all text is intact) and a few leaves in one signature (L) have a small puncture at the inner margin. One leaf (E7) in Vol. 5 has short closed tear in margin. The bindings are fragile but the bookblocks and text leaves are better than very good. (CBEL, ii, p. 527). Cecilia was Burney's second novel to be published anonymously and, like Evelina, it was both a critical and popular success. Among her contemporary admirers were Dr. Johnson, Edmund Burke, and Joshua Ryenolds. Her accute social observations and the touches of light comedy in her early work were a model for the succeeding generation of female writers, notably Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen. It was in the concluding pages of Cecilia that Austen found the title of her first novel, Pride and Prejudice. (DNB)., Very Good

VICTOR'S STORIES, FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
Binding:

[BURNHAM, Samuel]. VICTOR'S STORIES, FOR BOYS AND GIRLS. By the writer of "Uncle Paul's Stories." Boston: The American Tract Society, n.d. [1865, cf. The American Catalogue of Books, 1861-1866, p. 222]. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece with printed color, with a tissue guard, and wood-engraved illustrations and small vignette illustrations throughout text. Many of the illustrations are by John N. Hyde and were engraved by Samuel Cloues, Nathaniel Rudd, and "Peirce" (perhaps William J. Pierce?). Included among the moral tales, on pp. 44- 46, is a brief remembrance of the American Tract Society engraver Samuel Cloues and a report of his early death. iv, [5]-144 pp. Small quarto, 19.5 x 15 cm, green cloth publisher's binding: title within a decorative design in gilt to spine, triple ruled in blind on sides with a pictorial vignette gilt-stamped in the center of the upper board. Contemporary ink ownership ("Oliver R. Baker, 1868") on first fly-leaf. Binding is gently bumped and the cloth worn at fore-corners, with shallow loss at crown and fraying at heel, and shows some general light soiling. The tissue guard has a few small spots, with light offsetting to the title-page, and there is occasional light staining and soiling throughout the bookblock. Still it is an appealing book in very good condition., Very Good

TYPED LETTER, SIGNED
Imprint: 1954
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
BUSH, Prescott. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. United States Senate letterhead stationery, 10 1/2 x 8 in., dated May 25, 1954. Addressed to Robert Dudley French, Master of Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University, the letter expresses Bush's personal concern about the ongoing McCarthy-Army hearings and explains his rather limited public response to them. "I would have no hesitancy in answering the questions propounded in your letter... in my opinion, it is in the public interest that members of the Senate withhold comments on the merits of the controversy until they (the hearings) have been concluded. Believe me, my former teacher and old friend, nothing has more seriously disturbed me since I came to the Senate... For the present, the only action which appears open to me is to advocate the adoption of uniform rules which would give the Senate a greater measure of control over investigations than it has had in the past. This I have done..." The body of the letter is twenty-four lines and signed Pres twice at the end; once below a typed closing, and the second time below the hand-written postscript: "Please read my Cheshire speech" To illustrate the advocacy he mentions in his letter, Bush enclosed a press release of a speech he delivered in Cheshire, CT on May 15th and a tear sheet from the Congressional Record of May 24th. The letter and the enclosures are clean and neatly creased twice (for mailing). The Congressional Record is printed on paper of poor quality and is quite browned, with some transfer to the letter and the tear sheet.
