Octavo. xviii,304 pp. Contemporary publisher's binding, with binder's ticket (Cavenagh of Dublin) at rear pastedown: red ribbed cloth, gilt- stamped spine title, yellow coated endpapers. Ex-library; bookplate at front pastedown and no other marks. Binding is sunned at spine and along bottom edge of lower board, with shallow loss at crown, and moderately soiled and rubbed all over. Light foxing to a few leaves at the beginning and at the end, else clean within. A solid copy, about very good overall. Cairnes was an Irish economist and an influential follower of J. S. Mill. This book, published just at the outbreak of the American Civil War, was written in response to criticism of John Stuart Mill's book On Liberty (London, 1859), and is dedicated to him. In this work, which established his reputation, Cairnes examines the economic basis of slavery and the moral and industrial fruits of the system, the general purposes of southern leaders and the meaning of the Civil War. It was a powerful defence of the northern states and the anti-slavery cause and made a great impression in England and America. With seven folding plates of diagrams and a complete logarithmic table. The Jesuit College of San Antao was the first Jesuit foundation in Portugal (1553). Classes in mathematics began in 1590. Considered a fine university, San Antao was unusual in that the classes, like this book, were in Portuguese, most likely because the students came from all levels of society and could not be expected to know Latin. The college closed in 1759 with the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal. This is an interesting survival of early Jesuit teaching. Lacks frontispiece and title page. Otherwise internally fine. First edition of the second volume of the first national Canadian census. 8vo.: iv,474 pp., + [1] errata. Original green cloth, title and maple leaf printed to spine within a single-rule. Ex library; without any external marks, and having only a bookplate and two discreet embossed stamps within. Text leaves are clean; although a few leaves near the end have shallow creasing at the fore-edge. Cloth is sunned, particularly at spine, showing moderate soiling and staining overall, with wear at corners and to a couple of spots on spine. The upper joint is starting and there is a horizontal closed tear at spine. A good working copy., Good Stock number: 64920.

After the death of Carl Friedrich Canstatt in 1850 the "Report" was edited by his student Rudolph Virchow and others. Contains articles by Wiggers, Fick, Scherer, Loeschner, et al. Ex library, bound in morocco-backed marbled boards with original printed wrappers bound in. Binding shows wear to extremities. The last five leaves and rear flyleaf have a 4 inch horizontal tear, without any loss of text. Stock number: 87136.

By John Gorham Palfrey. Boston: Ferdinand Andrews, 1840. 71 pp. Octavo, contemporary quarter calf, marbled sides, gilt title at spine. Affixed to the final pastedown is a ticket to the celebration; it is inscribed with the name of Eben Bacon of Barnstable, a member of the Committee of Arrangements. The leather is rubbed, scuffed and rather dry; though the binding is sound. There is an abraded patch at the front pastedown, probably due to bookplate removal.
