Edition: First Edition

CATS, Jacob. HUWELYCK, dat is, Het gantsche beleyt des Echten Staats; afgedeelt in zes hoost-stukken, [Marriage, or, the whole account of the wedded state, divided into six sections: maidenhood, courtship, the bride, the wife, the mother, the widow. Illustrated with life-like plates]. s'Gravenhage, Pieter van Thol, 1740. Octavo. [xxii]538pp. +[1]f. Contains approximately 36 engravings by Noach van der Meer, roughly based on Adriaen Van de Venne's illustrations for the first edition of 1625. Jacob Cats (1577-1660), the beloved and prolific poet known as "Father Cats," was a jurist, statesman, and diplomat, and for fifteen years Raad-Pensionaris of Holland. With small marginal tears to pp. 39,84,108,183, and 411, small worm hole along inner margin of pp. 108-120, and small dampstain to corners of pp. 378- 428, none of these flaws affecting the printed area. Two signatures slightly starting; and the folding plate of children's games torn 4" along the fold line. In early vellum, lightly soiled. Light to moderate foxing. CAULFIELD, James
BLACKGUARDIANA

Imprint: 1795
Edition: First Edition

[CAULFIELD, James]. BLACKGUARDIANA: or, a Dictionary of Rogues, Bawds, Pimps, Whores, Pickpockets, Shoplifters, Mail-robbers, Coiners, House- breakers, Murderers, Pirates, Gipsies, Mountebanks, &c. &c. Illustrated with eighteen Portraits of the most remarkable Professors in every Species of Villainy. Interspersed with many curious Anecdotes, Cant Terms, Flash Songs, &c. The whole intended to put Society on their guard against Depredators; and was picked up by an Inhabitant of St. James's, who was a Spectator of a grand Scuffle, on a Birth-day Night. Copied for the Inspection of the Curious; and the Original ready to be returned (on describing the Binding, etc.) to the Loser. [London?] Printed for, and sold by John Shepherd, at the Golden Farmer, Bagshot; Sir John Falstaff, at the Boar's-head, Finchley-Common; Sir Henry Morgan, at the Land- Pirates, Hounslow; [etc., etc. 1793? 1795?]. The imprint listing notorious criminals as publishers/booksellers is fun but of necessity false, because this is a pirated reprint of the first edition of Francis Grose's "Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" printed at London, 1785. (The title is even used as a heading on two pages early in the text!) It is attributed to James Caulfield (1764-1826), a London author and printseller specializing in old English engravings and in portraits. He helped to feed the fashion for `grangerizing' or pasting extra illustrations into historical or topographical books, republishing many old plates and copying many old prints when the originals were too rare or too valuable to supply in quantity. Octavo, 21.5 x 13 cm, mostly unpaginated: [2], vii, [241] pp. Extra-illustrated, with a total of 41 prints bound- or tipped- in, many published by Caulfield and dated 1793 or 1794, plus one drawing. The prints show scoundrels of both sexes, some more grotesque than others. The composition of the wash drawing is the same as "The Bagpiper," an oil painting by David Teniers the Younger in the Louvre, only reduced in size. "Original sketch by Teniers?" is written tentatively in pencil beneath the drawing but, perhaps, it is a faithful copy. The text is arranged alphabetically as one would expect in a dictionary, but with some surprising entries. For instance, there is a series of mostly crim

CAYLUS, Anne Claude Philippe de Tobieres de
RECUEIL D'ANTIQUITES Egyptiennes, Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines

CAYLUS, Anne Claude Philippe de Tobieres de. RECUEIL D'ANTIQUITES Egyptiennes, Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines. Paris, Chez Duchesne, 1761- 1767. Seven volumes. Second edition of Volume I, with two title pages dated 1756 and 1761. First edition of Volumes II-VII (dated 1756, 1759, 1761, 1762, 1764, and 1767). Xix [3] 348pp. +[104]ff. plates; viii,429[3]pp. +[129]ff. plates; xxxvi,448pp. +[121]ff. plates; xx,418[1]pp. +[125]ff. plates; xxvi[2]348pp. +{121]FF. PLATES; XX, +132ff. plates; [4]xxviii,336pp. +[85]ff. plates. Lacking only 4 out 107 plates to Volume I, one plate out of 121 to Volume III, and seven out of 97 to Volume VII, leaving 818 of 830 numbered plates,(and 829 in total including four unnumbered plates and seven frontispieces). Several plates are out of order or misnumbered. A compendious and learned account of a formidable collection of antiquities, with over 800 plates, each with up to five objects depicted, plus headpieces and initials. Each object is discussed in detail in the text. Le Comte de Caylus was noted for many reasons, not all of them reputable, but primarily as a pioneer in the study of ancient objects, focussing on their subject matter and style with a critical eye. He left his collection to the King. He also studied the archaeological remains of the Gauls, and Volumes III-VII are titled "Recueil d'Antiquites Egyptiennes, Etrusques, Grecques, Romaines et Gauloises." Bound in full calf, the spines in six compartments, gilt with rococo floral tools and two morocco lettering-pieces. Wear to extremities; one board detached from each of Volumes I,II, and III; rear board of VII loose; some superficial splits to hinges and abrasions to boards. Light spotting here and there, faint dampstain to margins of two volumes, discoloration to tops of a few boards, but on the whole internally clean. An extraordinary record of early antiquarian scholarship.

CERVANTES DE SAAVEDRA, Miguel
LIFE AND EXPLOITS of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote

Imprint: 1742
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

CERVANTES DE SAAVEDRA, Miguel. THE LIFE AND EXPLOITS OF THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA. Translated from the Original Spanish by Charles Jarvis, Esq; London, J. & R. Tonson and R. Dodsley, 1742. Two quarto volumes. (i)-(xxiv)(8)(xxv)-xxxii,(i)-(viii)90,(14)355 pp.; i- xii,388 pp. Second issue, with "Supplement to the Translator's Preface," on the origin of books of chivalry, by Wiliam Warburton, inserted after I.xxiv. Illustrated with a portrait of Cervantes and 68 copperplate illustrations, drawn by John Vanderbank and engraved by Gerard Vander Gucht, from a Spanish-language Tonson edition of 1738 (Lord Carteret's edition - the first deluxe edition ever printed, and the first edition in Spanish published in England) with new page labels. Vanderbank, a popular portraitist, 37 of whose works are in the National Portrait Gallery, studied with Godfrey Kneller. The choice of a portraitist becomes clear in the "Advertisement concerning the Prints," where John Oldfield explains the restrained aesthetic, hinging on facial expression rather than action, which went into their planning. The portrait of Cervantes by G. Kent, engraved by George Vertue, is opposite the first page of the 90-page "Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra" (dated 1738) in Volume I. Ten engraved headpieces and initials. Text and illustrations are clean but for some occasional light foxing or soiling. Recently bound to period in quarter calf, with gilt rules and red and green labels on spine, and marbled paper boards. This is a handsome copy of a lavishly illustrated edition of the Spanish classic. $3750.00. Illustr: Vanderbank, John
