[COPPER ENGRAVING] MATSUURA YASU, artist.
NIKKO^ZAN MEISHO^ JU^NIKEI

Imprint: 1883

[COPPER ENGRAVING] MATSUURA YASU, artist. NIKKOZAN MEISHO JUNIKEI. Nikko: Shiozawa Ken'ichiro, Meiji 16 [1883]. The original sheets (from a folding album?) have been remounted on Japanese paper and fukuro-toji string binding. The cover of the original series is a bit edgeworn worn but the 12 hand-colored copper engravings, each about 12 x 17.5 cm, of sites around Nikko, waterfalls, river views, etc., are lovely - well-printed and well-preserved. From an interesting period aesthetically, when Japanese artists and craftsmen were introducing Western-derived techniques like lithography and engraving into printmaking, printing and the allied arts on a popular level. Unusual work.

COXE, Richard Smith
NEW CRITICAL PRONOUNCING DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Imprint: 1813
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

[COXE, Richard Smith]. A NEW CRITICAL PRONOUNCING DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, CONTAINING, ALL THE WORDS IN GENERAL USE ... Compiled from authors of the most approved reputation: with considerable additions. By an American Gentleman. Burlington, NJ: Published by D. Allinson & Co. for themselves; [et al.], 1813. First edition. xiv, 85, [914] pp. Snall 4to., 24.4 x 15 cm. Contemporary binding; full leather with gilt rules and red morocco label ('English and Classical Dictionary') on spine. Engraved bookplate of Beverly Waugh, with pencil signature of E. Waugh Cullen below, on front pastedown. Binding shows general wear (some scuffing and scratches), with shallow loss at crown. Text is very clean despite a very few, scattered, small ink spots. An attractive copy in very good condition. Richard Smith Coxe ((1792-1865) was born in Burlington, NJ, graduated the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1805, and studied law, first with Judge William Griffith of Burlington and then with Horace Binney of Philadelphia, before being admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1812. In 1822 he established a practice in Washington DC, where he proved himself a distinguished member of the District bar, arguing frequently and successfully before the Supreme Court. He compiled this massive dictionary largely before he turned eighteen; and it is, unsurprisingly, a derivative work based upod the work of Samuel Johnson and others. Included in the body of the work are the "Preface to Mr. (John) Walker's dictionary" and Walker's "Principles of English Pronunciation." Fellcone notes two slightly varying printer's imprints on the final text page, though without any textual differences. In this copy the line reads "Lexington Press." (Felcone, NEW JERSEY BOOKS 1801-1860, 531; D.A.B. II, pp. 487-488; Shaw & Shoemaker 28239)., Very Good

COYNE, J. Stirling, N. P. WILLIS et al. SCENERY AND ANTIQUITIES OF IRELAND (2 VOLUMES BOUND IN ONE). Engravings after originals by W. H. BARTLETT. London: James S. Virtue [1841]. 124 + 108 pp. + plates throughout. Complete. 120 engravings. Boards and spine shelfworn, front joint cracked. top of spine has 1 inch closed tear. Boards stamped in gilt and blind. The spine labels are missing but the tooled impressions are still legible, the title along with harps and shamrocks. Marbled endpapers and edges. Owner's inkstamp excessively and obsessively applied throughout the volume: on title-page, sporadically in text, and once in the margin of each plate, crowding the image and intruding slightly in just one corner of the image, and on reverse of each plate. Good overall, with lovely plates. Its condition would be more favaorably rated if not for the unfortunate ink- stamping; and it is priced accordingly:, Good
