Imprint: 1875
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

CRUIKSHANK, George. CRUIKSHANKIANA: BEING A COLLECTION OF THE MOST CELEBRATED WORKS OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. London: Frederick Bentley, [1875]. 2 ff. + 83 plates. 42 x 27 cm. Most by George Cruikshank except for 7 by Robert Cruikshank and 6 by Richard Dighton. Folio, half red morocco over red cloth boards, raised bands, gilt spine and corner decorations, t.e.g. First published in 1835 by McClean, these humorous illustrations provide sharp commentary on the travails of high society, highlighting monstrous fashions and military dandyism, as well as "London Nuisances," such as sidewalk perils and others. Fair to good, with dampstaining to both boards and front board bowed. Some wear and small chips at heel and crown, with corners slightly worn. Closed 2" tear to ffep. Some plates have a tideline that varies from the very shallow, just along one edge or corner, to almost touching the image; some of these with occasional, light foxing in the margins. The tideline just enters the image of the last six plates. Nonetheless, most of the images are clean and suitable for framing. (English Catalogue of Books, III, p. 112; Cohn, Bibliographical Catalogue., 207, for the 1835 first edition)., Good

A PHYSICAL DIRECTORY

Imprint: 1649
Edition: First Edition

CULPEPER, Nicholas. A PHYSICAL DIRECTORY or a Translation of the London Dispensatory Made by the Colledge of Physicians in London. Being that Book by which all Apothicaries are strictly commanded to make all their Physick with many hundred additions ... Also there is added the use of all the simples ... London: Peter Cole, 1649. First edition, a translation from the Latin of the Pharmacopoeia Londinensis (1618) of the College of Physicians. Small quarto. [18], 345 [i.e. 311, due to pagination errors & two missing leaves], [28] pp. Lacks frontispiece portrait and 2 leaves of text (K2&3, or pp. 59-62) Contemporary calf binding, rubbed and a little worn at extremities, with boards slightly bowed. Later endpapers, only the rear free endpaper has been removed, with a nineteenth-century bookplate at front pastedown. Ex library, a perforated stamp to title leaf and no other marks. Some leaves partially sprung but on the whole sound. Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654) was a Parliamentarian, wounded in the Civil War. He studied at Cambridge and apprenticed with two different apothecaries. In 1640 he began practice as a physician-astrologer, a practice not unusual for doctors of his day. He often treated the poor without charging for his service, and felt that everyone should have access to information about materia medica. The College of Physicians, feeling it held a monopoly on the official dispensatory, was angered when he published this unauthorized English-language translation of the Pharmacopoeia Londinensis and attacked his character. In spite of his astrological leanings, he was considered a competent physician and was a prolific writer of medical manuals. A rare title, it is offered as is. (Wellcome II, 414; Wing C7540; D.N.B.; Heirs to Hippocrates, p. 186).

CULVERWELL, Robert James
PORNEIOPATHOLOGY: A POPULAR TREATISE ON VENEREAL AND OTHER DISEASES

Binding: Hardback

CULVERWELL, R. J. PORNEIOPATHOLOGY: A POPULAR TREATISE ON VENEREAL AND OTHER DISEASES OF THE MALE AND FEMALE GENITAL SYSTEM; WITH REMARKS ON IMPOTENCE, ONANISM, STERILITY, PILES, AND GRAVEL, AND PRESCRIPTIONS FOR THEIR TREATMENT. New York: J. S. Redfield, 1844. Probable first American edition. (The bibliographic record of Culverwell's several treatises on sexual hygiene, behavior, disorders, etc. is very confused. Part of the reason lies in the possibility that completely different works may have been published under the same title on occasion. -- Atwater 1, 1, pp. 237- 238.) Title-page says illustrated "with one hundred plates" but the reality is many small (creepy) wood-engraved text illustrations. 215 pp. 12mo., bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt-stamped title on upper board and spine. Ex library, with spine label and an ink stamp on front pastedown and on the title-page. Heavy foxing throughout. Large chip missing from front flyleaf. This popular treatise, published by J. S. Redfield -- Edgar Allen Poe's chief publisher, was written for "the young and the thoughtless," explaining "the structure and anatomy of the parts primarily affected by venereal disease, and describing its first as well as its subsequent and aggravated symptoms, and pointing out the safest treatment of it in experienced hands." It is a scarce title, offered as is. (Atwater Collection 1, no. 848, and a note in 3, no. S-702.)

DANA, Henry S. HISTORY OF WOODSTOCK, VERMONT. Cambridge: [Privately Published] Printed at the Riverside Press, 1887.
