DIAZ, Anna M.
ENTERTAINING STORY OF KING BRONDE

Imprint: 1868
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

DIAZ, Anna M. [actually Abby Morton] THE ENTERTAINING STORY OF KING BRONDE, HIS LILY AND HIS ROSEBUD. With Illustrations by W. L. Sheppard. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, (1868). First edition of the author's first book - despite having contributed to many periodicals (The Atlantic Monthly, St. Nicholas, The Youth's Companion, Wide Awake, etc.) in the years preceding its appearance. Wood-engraved illustrations. Nearly square 12mo. Publisher's blue cloth binding with blindstamped double-rule frames on sides, with the title "The King's Lily and Rosebud" is gilt- stamped on the upper board within a decorative frame of leaves and on the spine; brown coated endpapers. The binding shows general shelfwear and some light soiling, with shallow loss at crown. Text leaves are lightly toned throughout and the final fifty pages or so have a small dampstain at the inside bottom corner. The last signature is partially sprung and loose. Early gift inscription (October 28, 1868) in pencil on first fly- leaf. About very good. Over the course of her long and busy life Abby Morton Diaz (1821-1904) was a teacher, for a while at the Transcendentalist community at Brook Farm, and later, as a divorced mother with three children, she worked as a professional author, publishing stories and articles in the leading juvenile and domestic periodicals of the day. She was politically active, involved in the abolitionist and woman-suffrage movements, and was a founding member of the Women's Trade and Industrial Union of Boston, serving as its president from 1881 to 1892. (NAW 1, p. 471-473)., Very Good

HARD TIMES

Imprint: 1854
Binding: Paperback

DICKENS, Charles. HARD TIMES. New York: T. L. McElrath & Co., 1854. 'First' American edition - one of several issued that year. This edition derives from the typesetting for the periodical publication of Hard Times in the American issue of Household Words, also published by T. L. McElrath. Octavo. [2],108,[2] pp. Text printed in double columns. The final leaf is a blank. Original dun paper wrappers with price (25 cents), title and the name of the Boston agents, Fetridge & Company, printed on the front wrapper, and an advertisement for a face cream - available at Fetridge & Co. - on the back. Although the wrappers are stained and edge- creased, they are surprisingly intact. The stains on the covers have seeped into the bookblock, diminishing as the pages progress toward the center. Sporadic pages have light-colored foxing, which is occasionally heavy. Some leaves have slightly dog-eared corners. One leaf (p. 105-6) has some loss in fore-edge. Very good overall. (See Podeschi A138 - third copy.) Offered with: HARD TIMES, Chapters 1-5, and part of Chapter 6, as issued in the American edition of "HOUSEHOLD WORDS, a journal conducted by Charles Dickens" for May 1854 (New York: McElrath & Barker, Boston: Frederick Parker. Volume 2, Number 1; Whole Number Monthly 13). Dickens' story appears at the beginning of the issue and again at the end, in groups of pages numbered 1-4 and 5-12, with 92 pp. of the regular issue between them. Text is printed in double columns within a double-rule frame on each page. Bound in the original dun paper wrappers, with the title information printed on the front wrap and an advertisement for Hard Times on the back. Wrappers are moderately edgeworn, chipped, and creased, with some soiling and staining. There is a dampstain on the front cover at the fore-edge and intermittently, waxing and waning, throughout the bookblock. Otherwise the text leaves are clean. Good plus. A very scarce format., Good

MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

Imprint: 1870
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

DICKENS, Charles. THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. With Twelve Illustrations by S. L. Fildes, and a Portrait. London: Chapman & Hall, [April - September] 1870. First edition. A total of 14 illustrations, including a portrait of Dickens and a vignette title-page. Octavo. [viii,1]-190,[2] pp. In the original six monthly parts, as issued, in blue paper wrappers. Housed in a green three-quarter leather pull-off case in a green cloth chemise. Wrappers show some general light wear but, some minor expert repair and are very good overall. The front wrap on Part 1 has a small ink spot near one edge and shows a bit more wear than the other wrappers. Almost all advertisements are present, including the rare cork ad in Part 2, lacking only four pages (nos. 7 - 10) of the "Edwin Drood Advertiser" in Part 3 and the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 5. Another minor difference, the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 1 is not completely unpaginated; pages 2 and 3 are marked as such. Part 6 has the "Eighteenpence" slip pasted over the original price on front wrap as found in the earliest issues. Some plates show mild light foxing. Text leaves are clean. This was Dickens' last work; it was left unfinished at his death in June, 1870. (Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 371-384)., Very Good

London: Printed for Humphrey Mosely, and are to be sold at his shop, at the sign of the Prince's Arms in St Pauls Church-yard, 1651. First edition, with the final letter dated "Sherburn, March 39, 1639." Small woodcut vignettes on title-page, a crown and rose and a crown and fleur-de-lis, and page [iii], a rose and a thistle. He married the famous beauty Venetia Stanley, whom he met as a child and to whom he was devoted - even after her death. He was Ben Jonson's patron in London, and he associated with Voltaire and other learned men when he lived in France. He was an early member of the Royal Society (his paper entitled "A Discourse Concerning the Vegetation of Plants" was the first formal publication authorized by the Society, in 1661) and made positive contributions to modern embryology, though he also had a strong interest in occult philosophy and alchemy. Lord Clarendon, his contemporary, observed that "he possessed all the advantages which nature and art and excellent education could give him." In this volume Lord George, who was born and lived his early life in Catholic Spain but raised in the Church of England, attacks the Roman Catholic Church, while Sir Kenelm, who was born in Protestant England and raised in the Roman Catholic Church, and educated by Jesuits, defends the authority of

DITTRICH, Max
DER DEUTSCH-FRANZOSISCHE KRIEG 1870 UND 1871

Imprint: 1890
Binding: Hardback

DITTRICH, Max. DER DEUTSCH-FRANZOSISCHE KRIEG 1870 UND 1871. Gedenk- Blatter in Wort und Bild an die Ehrentage der deutschen Nation. Dresden & New York: Druck & Verlag von H. G. Munchmeyer, [1890]. Profusely illustrated with color lithographs and wood-engraved text illustrations. 86pp., plus illus. 17 3/4 by 22 3/8 inches (45.5 x 55.2 cm.). Oblong folio, brown cloth, interlaced border stamped in black to boards, title and decoration stamped in gilt to upper board. This is a near contemporary account of the Franco-Prussian war, which resulted in the establishment of the Third Republic of France and the German Empire, produced in Germany. It is illustrated with 25 full-page lithographs depicting military actions; 24 of which are in brilliant color. The text pages have printed borders and numerous wood-engraved illustrations showing supplementary action and portraits of prominent people and leaders on both the French and German sides. The paper has toned at the edges and is brittle, showing several short tears and some chipping; the title page is torn in half, but both pieces are present. The volume is dampstained along the fore-edge, affecting the text and some of the plates. Two of the plates have closed tears which enter the image. The volume lacks the spine, although both boards are attached to the text block by the sewing cords; the cloth is moderately stained, and the gilt has dulled. This is an interesting historical item with impressive chromoliths; it is offered as is.
