DUPUIS, Joseph
JOURNAL OF A RESIDENCE IN ASHANTEE
Imprint: 1824
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
DUPUIS, Joseph. JOURNAL OF A RESIDENCE IN ASHANTEE. Comprising notes and researches relative to the Gold Coast, and the Interior of Western Africa; chiefly collected from Arabic MSS. and information communicated by the Moslems of Guinea: to which is prefixed an account of the origin and causes of the present war. London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1824. First edition. Illustrated with a folding map and fifteen plates, of which three are folding and one a double-spread. [2],viii,xxxviii,[2],264,cxxxvi pp. Quarto, untrimmed. Original binding; brick cloth spine and grey paper boards, with a printed paper spine label. Boards show general wear at edges and moderate soiling. The cloth spine is sunned and worn through in places, revealing a heavier cloth support below, and the label is chipped. Sporadic foxing throughout text leaves, mostly in the margins, with occasional soiling; however, the foxing is moderately heavy on the opening and closing leaves. The plates show light to moderate foxing, and a few of the plates have some splitting at folds. One plate has an irregular closed tear at the inside edge of the plate. The map also has an irregular tear and is missing chip at the inside edge of the plate. Nonetheless, it is a scarce work, complete and in original boards. Lowndes calls it "a valuable work written by a man of talent." (Abbey 281).

DURANTY, Louis Emile Edmond
THEATRE DES MARIONNETTES DU JARDIN DES TUILERIES
Imprint: 1863
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback
DURANTY, [Louis-Emile Edmond]. THEATRE DES MARIONNETTES DU JARDIN DES TUILERIES. Texte et composition des dessins par M. Duranty. Paris: Imprimerie de Dubuisson et Cie., (1863). First edition. Illustrated with 24 hand-colored plates and with 25 color vignette illustrations laid-down on text pages within a printed double-rule border. [2] ff., ii, 387, [3] pp. Quarto, 11 by 7.5 in. (28 x 19 cm), in a modern binding of red cloth- backed marbled boards, with a black morocco spine label, and the original printed paper wrappers bound-in. The text is comprised of a brief introduction followed by the texts of 24 plays performed at the puppet theater in the Tuilieries Garden. Each play is accompanied by a full-page plate and has a vignette illustration laid-down at the head of the first page. The plays and illustrations feature Commedia dell'arte characters such as Polichinelle, Arlequin, Cassandre, Le Gendarme, Le Diable, Columbine, Pierrot, and Le Sorcier. Although this copy lacks the dedication page and has some scattered light foxing throughout, it is otherwise complete and attractive, having bright and lively illustrations, and in very good condition. Edmond Duranty (1833-1880) was an author and influential art critic, being the first to write an insightful analysis of Impressionism in 1876. Initially a champion of Realism, having co-founded the monthly journal Realisme in 1856, and having written several novels in the Realist-Naturalist style in the 1860s, he became a champion of the new Impressionist art after 1863 when Emilie Zola introduced him to Impressionist painters. Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas became good friends, and Degas painted a great portrait of him in 1879. References: Vicaire III: 534. Sorensen, Lee. "Duranty, [Louis-Emile] Edmond Duranty." EDGE,Frederick Milnes
MAJOR GENERAL MCCLELLAN AND THE CAMPAIGN OF THE YORKTOWN PENINSULA
Imprint: 1865
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
EDGE, Frederick Milnes. MAJOR GENERAL MCCLELLAN AND THE CAMPAIGN OF THE YORKTOWN PENINSULA. With a map of the peninsula drawn expressly for this work by James Wyld, geographer to the Queen. London: Trubner & Co., 1865. First edition. Octavo. iv,203 pp. Maroon cloth, gilt-stamped title to spine, brown coated endpapers. Pencil ownership of H. O. Marcy on t.p., and a bookplate at front pastedown. The fold-out map has some extra creases from careless folding but is whole. A few pages have some browning (probably caused by newspaper clippings that had been laid-in, though they are no longer present), otherwise the text is quite clean. Slight wear to cloth at heel and crown. Front hinge is cracked and the rear hinge is starting. Nonetheless, it is a sound reading copy. (Sabin 21846). The pencil ownership on the t.p. is signed "H. O. Marcy," most likely Henry Orlando Marcy (1837-1924), a surgeon in the Massachusetts militia during various campaigns of the Civil War, especially at the siege of Charleston. In the last year of the war he was appointed medical director of Florida. "His work was characterized by common sense, for he did much to prevent dysentery among the troops by supplying them with fresh and well-cooked food, and at Charleston, his house-to-house cleaning, with a force of five hundred men, made a sanitary city out of one that was pest-ridden." (D.A.B., vol. VI.) After the war, Marcy became the first American pupil of Joseph Lister, the founder of antiseptic surgery, and intoduced his method of antiseptic wound treatment to America. He published a great deal about hernia; however, his most important original contribution to American surgery was the development of animal sutures.

EDGEWORTH, MARIA
MEMOIRS OF RICHARD LOVELL EDGEWORTH, BEGUN BY HIMSELF AND CONCLUDED BY
Imprint: 1849
Edition: First Edition
EDGEWORTH, Maria. THE MEMOIRS OF RICHARD LOVELL EDGEWORTH, BEGUN BY HIMSELF AND CONCLUDED BY HIS DAUGHTER. London: R. Hunter/Baldwin Cradock & Joy, 1820. First edition. 2 vols. Rebound in later 3/4 brown leather by Riviere. A bit of foxing to preliminary pages, otherwise a lovely pleasing set. Edgeworth (1768-1849) was the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817), a wealthy Irish landlord. "He was an eccentric, radical and inventive man, deeply interested in the practical applications of science and in education. His influence on Maria was profound; he frequently 'edited' her work, managed her career, and imparted to her many of his own enthusiasms." (Oxford Companion to English Lit.). Illustr: FE
