GENDAI HAIGA SHU^

Imprint: 1916
Edition: First Edition

[EHON] GENDAI HAIGA SHU [A COLLECTION OF MODERN HAIGA] 1 volume [of 4] Summer. Summer has 30 full page color woodcuts, complete as called for. String-bound Japanese style in printed paper covers. Dated Taisho 5 [1916], first printing. Compiled by Shimada Yukichi; printed by Kishi Kageyoshi and published by Haigado, Tokyo. The GENDAI HAIGA SHU is a work of considerable skill and scarcity. The list of artists involved is a long one, including Nakamura Fusetsu, Tomita Keisen, Ishii Hakutei, Hirafuku Hyakusui, Ota Saburo, Kosugi Misei, Shimomura Izan and many other important figures in Western-style painting, here working in their literati "haiga" mode. Mitchell had but one volume of the four, the British Library only procured its own complete set within the last ten or fifteen years. Hillier seems to have missed the existence of the book completely. Our "Summer" volume is clean and fresh throughout and the overall condition of the book is very good, with the original covers. The work seems to have escaped the foxing so prevalent in other Taisho era productions. One volume., Very Good

[EHON] Ito^ Chu^ta
ASHURA CHO^

Imprint: 1921
Binding: Hardback

[EHON] Ito Chuta. ASHURA CHO Dai Go-kan. Tokyo: Kokusui Shuppansha, (Arata Eisuke), Taisho 10 [1921]. 5 volumes complete. Bound in printed cloth over [25.6 x 21.4 cm] boards with thongs. Entitled (roughly) "Demon Sketchbook". The Asuras of the title are the warrior gods of Indian religion, condemned to constant strife. The book is a deeply bitter and ironic look at the politics and social scene of the World War I era, not only in Japan itself, but around the world. As such it is an amazing slice of life during and after the world war from the unique perspective of a Japanese humanist given to Swiftian excess. The author (and illustrator), Ito Chuta, was an architect and gifted caricaturist. The printer/publisher was a bit of an ironist himself, as the closing note mentions that his "National Purity Publications" ["Kokusui Shuppansha"] did not quite embody the usual "National Purity" which was being bruited about. Obviously this work is a product of Taisho liberalism. Ten or so years earlier or later, it would have never reached the light of day in a less tolerant political atmosphere. There are 500 pages of plates, each is one-half color woodcut caricature and one-half wry commentary in a combination of letterpress and woodcut calligraphy. Well-printed and interesting, the full set of 500 plates in five volumes - with the original clasped cases - is quite a find, as one only occasionally finds even odd volumes. The cases are a bit chipped, the outer boxes very unusual, the contents are quite clean, in very good overall condition., Good

Large format books of oban-size color woodcut images, each sealed "Bairei." 37 x 25 cm (24 1/2 by 9 3/4 inches). Each of the volumes is comprised of 25 images, for a total of 50, that show birds throughout the changing seasons (vol. 1: Spring & Summer, vol. 2: Fall & Winter). The designs are fresh and lively - perhaps the finest of the large-format bird compilations of mid to late Meiji era Japan, and certainly the scarcest. This copy, a very good printing with lovely colors, has just a bit of soiling to the covers. Mitchell 217 references this printing (seen by him) as a re-issue of the Okura edition of 1883. Both issues are very unusual. Complete in a custom clasped chitsu case., Very Good

There is a second colophon on the pastedown of the rear cover, this one of Yoshida Shimbei alone, dated Bunsei 7 [1824]. Thus, a fairly early printing of this work., Good

[EHON] KITAO KEISAI MASAYOSHI. (CHO^JU^; JINBUTSU; SANSUI) RYAKUGA-SHIKI 3 vols. To^kyo^, Yoshikawa Ko^bunkan, n.d. [1890s?] String-bound, Japanese- style, fukuro-toji. Original blind-patterned green cobvers with printed paper title labels. 24.7 x 18.2 cm. These three color-printed woodblock versions of the famous Raykugashiki by Keisai Masayoshi still retain their original Kansei and Bunka colophon dates, along with the Yoshikawa additions. My supposition would be that the hangi blocks were in the hands of Ko^bunkan for a while in mid to late Meiji before being taken over by Unso^do^, who issued several printing all through the 20th century. We have handled several printings by Unso^do^, but this is the first Yoshikawa Ko^bunkan version we have handled. The Landscape [SANSUI] volume has some foxing, the other two are clean in and out. As the poriginal blocks were quite bold, they have held up well, without loss of much detail. y goood condition.

[EHON] KEISAI Masayoshi, artist
CHO^JU RYAKUGASHIKI

[EHON] KEISAI Masayoshi, artist. CHOJU RYAKUGASHIKI. Edo, Kyoto, Nagoya & Osaka. Originally published in Edo by Suharaya Ichibei in 1797, this more darkly colored undated version may well be from the mid-19th century. The undated rear inside cover pseudo-colophon lists 10 bookshops as sales agents, 4 in Edo, 3 each in Kyoto and Osaka. Light blue kara-zuri decorated covers, string-bound Japanese style, fukuro-toji, with a printed paper title label. 24.9 x 17.6 cm. Overall this later printing is helped by the fact that the designs are bold and simple - the printings remain crisp. Elephants, frogs and falcons; bugs, fish and mythological beasties - they are depicted with economy and humor. Perhaps the most unusual and creative of all Masayoshi's RYAKUGASHIKI (simple drawing books). The covers are a bit soiled. The contents are in very good condition, fair to good impression. Great fun! [EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P.
CHOIX DE FABLES DE LA FONTAINE

Imprint: 1895

[EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P. CHOIX DE FABLES DE LA FONTAINE. 2 volumes in 1. Tokio: MDCCCXCIV. Imprimerie de Tsoukidji-Tokio. (Printer: Kimura Tokutaro^; First Series, printed September 20th, published September 30th; Second Series, printed October 10th, published October 20th, Meiji 27 [1894]. Large format plain paper book, bound with the original covers into a contemporary Western style half leather binding. The first volume is 20 X 30 cm, with 14 double page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu, Kajita Hanko, Kawanabe Kyo^sui, and Okakura Sho^so^ called for. The "deuxieme serie" is similarly bound, 20 x 30 cm, with 14 prints by the four previously listed artists, along with Eda Sadashiko. This work, with its French text and literary origins, may be placed in the mainstream of an emerging international style in Japan. Yet it may be still be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese illustrated book. It shares many of the characteristics of the revival of Japanese picture book printing in general at the end of the 19th century: an emerging Nihonga style which was an amalgam of theme and technique from East and West, skilled printing, increasingly restrained coloration, etc.. An interesting document of East-West cultural and artistic accommodation, which gave rise to such hybrid vigor in world art. The bound-in covers and contents are perfect. However, the leather binding is worn and was rebacked at some point. The two volumes, complete, and bound as one.

[EHON] Katsushika HOKUSAI, artist.
DO^CHU^ GAFU, Zen

[EHON] Katsushika HOKUSAI, artist. DOCHU GAFU, Zen. Kogetsudo Bunsuke, Nagoya, 1835 [sic]. 22.6 x 15.8 cm. Orange covers, printed paper title label. 34 sheets of double page illustrations, covering views on the Tokaido road. As Matthi Forrer devotes an entire chapter to the publishing history of this book in his EIRAKUYA TOSHIRO, it should be sufficient to state that this is the variant Kogetsudo issue, with only part of the banner present at Kawasaki. Hence it probably dates from the 1850's or 60's. The colors throughout are very light. Though the book is complete in its original covers, it is quite worn and thumbed. Despite the poor condition, it still shows why this is one of the loveliest of Hokusai's books.

[EHON] HOKKEI/HOKUSAI
DO^CHU^ GAFU 2 vols.

[EHON] HOKKEI/HOKUSAI. DO^CHU^ GAFU 2 vols. Nagoya: Eirakuya To^shiro, n.d. [c.1865-70]. String-bound, Japanese style, in orange covers embossed with the Eirakuya design and a printed paper title label, 22.7 x 16.2 cm., together in a clasped chitsu case. A very pleasant copy, printed in light colors, of an interesting book with a long and complex bibliography - so complex that Matthi Forrer devoted the first chapter of his book on the Eirakuya Toshiro publishing firm to its explanation. The copy at hand would appear to be the second Eirakuya iteration, hence the fourth edition, after the first private printing around 1820, followed by the second edition [first commercial] by Eirakuya, and the third edition by Kogetsudo Bunsuke. Among the changes effected through the years was the addition of a preliminary double-page plate by Hokusai. The original designs by his student Hokkei were repackaged as Hokusai's work thereafter. Our copy has, as a bit of an anomaly, a bound in copy of the A1 Eirakuya ad page, which originally appeared in about 1820 and could have no real connection to this edition of some 45 to 50 years later. In any event, an interesting anachronism. The printing is fair to good throughout, and its condition is quite good overall. Complete, and by no means a common book in decent condition and impression such as this., Good

[EHON] Katsushika HOKUSAI
EHON TEIKIN O^RAI

[EHON] Katsushika HOKUSAI. EHON TEIKIN ORAI Zen. Nagoya: Eirakuya Toshiro. N.D. [Probably 1840's - originally published in 1820's]. 22.7 x 15.6 cm. String-bound, Japanese-styel, fukuro toji. Each of the three volumes consists of thirty sheets, making for a total of 90 sheets and nearly 200 Hokusai designs - landscapes, genre scenes, historical vignettes, fish, flowers, etc., etc. This guide to domestic behaviour with its charming illustrations is by no means common. Our copy is bound three volumes in one (as the Eirakuya editions are) with the original covers and printed paper title label. The Eirakuya editions, of which this is an early example, reprinted the volume one, done some 20 years earlier by Eijudo of Edo, but then added two more volumes worth of new material. Our copy is a Forrer F-23a, without the second preface, thus probably dating from the late 1840's. The impressions in the first volume are good only, but are better in volumes two and three, as you would expect from the work's bibliographic history. All in all a remarkable archive of images. The blue-green covers are bit soiled, there is a wormtrack through the first few pages, but overall in good condition., Good

[EHON] Tsukioka Settei
EHON SAGASHIGUSA [ONNA BUYU^ YOSO-OI KURABE]

Imprint: 1766
Edition: First Edition

[EHON] Tsukioka Settei. EHON SAGASHIGUSA [ONNA BUYU YOSO-OI KURABE]. Edo: Suharaya Mohei & Osaka: Ono Kihei, Meiwa 3 [1766]. 3 vols in one, string- bound Japanese-style in later covers with brushed title label. 26.8 X 18.4 cm, appears to be complete as gappon. Settei here signs himself Tsukioka Masanobu. One of the finest and most powerful of the mid-18th century ukiyo-e masters. The line is virile, the compositions daring - a thoroughly satisfying work - BUT, though it has been repaired, many of the illustrations (at least a fifth of them) have been irremedially damaged. The first printing was issued in Horeki 6 [1757], but this issue is also every well printed. Very scarce work - few copies are located in KSSM., Fine

[EHON] Kitao SHIGEMASA
EHON KAGAMI GUSA 2 vols.

Imprint: 1768

[EHON] Kitao SHIGEMASA. EHON KAGAMI GUSA 2 vols. 21.5 x 15.4 cm. Original flower-printed covers with original printed title labels. N.D., printed by Nishimura Genroku. A book with the same title (but written with differfent Kanji) is cited in KSSM as published in Meiwa 5 [1768] but from a different publisher and in three volumes. The Nishimura Genroku catalogue at the end of our volume 2 lists the current book EHON KAGAMI GUSA (with the proper Kanji) as complete in 2 volumes. One might assume that this work is actually a different work from the one which appears in the KSSM with the same (pronunciation of the) title by Shigemasa, as another work advertised by Genroku in the book catalogue at the end of our volumes as "to be printed soon" actually appeared in the late 1780s. So, I would date this volume as appearing in the late 1780s, when Shigemasa was in his 40s, rather than much earlier in his career. A lovely book on a small scale populated with historical and contemporary figures with an innocence and a "look" reminiscent of Sukenobu. Slight internal soiling, good sumi-e impressions throughout. Internally complete collation. Obviously very scarce and interesting, especially as this is the Bing collection copy., Good
