Imprint: 1829

[EHON] Onishi Chinnen, artist. EHON AZUMA NO TEBURI. Edo: Kobayashi Shimbei & Osakaya Gembei, Bunsei 12 [1829]. 27.8 x 18.6 cm, string bound Japanese-style, fukuro toji, (replacement?) blue paper covers with blindprinted geometric patterning. The title slip is missing as well, but otherwise this copy collates identically with the copy in Mitchell, p.214. See Hillier, volume 2, pp. 768-70, in which he describes Chinnen's SONAN GAFU & this volume, the AZUMA NO TEBURI, as being "among the best known and most admired of all Japanese books". The 25 double page color prints of genre scenes in Edo done in Chinnen's inimitable Shijo style are very well printed. The colors are excellent and are those of an early printing. This is a very handsome book and an important cornerstone item for any ehon collection - Chinnen only produced two major works of book illustration, this and the iconic SONAN GAFU. Complete.

[EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P.
FABLES CHOISES DE FLORIAN

Imprint: 1895

[EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P. FABLES CHOISES DE FLORIAN. The first volume only. Paris: Librairie Marpon & Flammarion; (Tokyo: Shueisha) Meiji 28 [1895]. Fukuro toji, cord-bound in printed paper covers. This first volume is 26.6 X 19.8 cm, with 14 full page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu and Kajita Hanko. #167 of 200 from a deluxe edition on Japanese hosho paper. Covers soiled and a bit edgeworn (one cvorner chipped). The contents are very good and the impressions and colors are quite lovely. This work, despite its French text, may be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese ehon and it shares many characteristics of the revival of picture book printing in mid to late Meiji demonstrated by other works: an emerging Nihonga style, skilled printed, increasingly restrained coloration, etc. In that context, the large scale of its illustrations renders it particularly interesting. The first volume only (of two)., Very Good

[EHON] Niwa KAGEN, artist
FUKUZENSAI GAFU

Imprint: 1814

[EHON] Niwa KAGEN, artist. FUKUZENSAI GAFU 5 volumes. Tall, slender orihon folding volumes in original brownish yellow covers, with original printed title labels. 28.0 x 15.2 cm. There are a total of 40 delicately printed color double-page woodblock prints. Done with subtlety and much use of bokashi, though a few of the prints are a bit out of register. This copy collates exactly the same as Mitchell's Example "B" at pp. 255- 6. The FUKUZENSAI GAFU is an interesting book, as, according to the book's preface, it was ostensibly created by Kagen in the early 1780s and here the original blocks, with color blocks added, were used in bunka 11 [1815] to print a full edition. I can see no reference save that of the preface of the book itself which indicates that the original edition was ever printed in any form. This is a work which, when seen, is usually quite tired. It appeared on various types of paper and the slightly heavier washi used here has stood up quite well to the years, without much browning of the lovely colors. The harder toshi paper sometimes used is often quite browned and fragile, the folds splitting. So, this is a quite unusually whole and lovely version of the book. Complete.

[EHON] I-Fukyu & Ike no Taiga

Imprint: 1803

[EHON] I-Fukyu & Ike no Taiga. I-FUKYU IKE NO TAIGA GAFU. Kyoto & Edo: Maruya Gempachiro & Suharaya Mohei. Kyowa 3 [1803]. 27.2 x 18.2 cm. Blue paper covers, string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. Original printed paper title labels. Follows the copy at Mitchell 307, save that the ordering of the prefatory and final materials seems to follow the order of the copy found at Odin 143. Worn covers and abraded title labels, some repaired, mostly marginal, worming inside. Still a more than serviceable copy of this lovely book. The famous Nanga artist Ike no Taiga has a volume to himself, accompanying the volume dedicated to the Chinese artist I-Fukyu. To my eye, Taiga's wonderful whimsy and pictorial variety carry the day. Printed in black and white throughout. The book deserves a wider audience than it has received to date.

GYO^KAI RYAKUGA-SHIKI

[EHON] Keisai Masayoshi, artist. GYO^KAI RYAKUGA-SHIKI with original Bunka colophon, but this is undoubtedly a 20th century reprint in color woodblock, perhaps from the original blocks, perhaps by Unso^do^ of Kyo^to.. 1 volume, complete. Plain brown covers, string-bound Japanese style, fukuro toji, with the printed title label. 24.6 X 17.9 cm. See Mitchell p. 517 for a concise explanation of the complex 19th century bibliography concerning this work originally published in 1802 as TATSU NO MIYA TSUKO, complete with haiku verses, here eliminated. The version at hand is part of the 20th century production of this work, demonstrating its ongoing popularity as a classic of Japanese book illustration. There are 30 double-page color woodcuts of fish and shellfish. A classic naturalistic work reminiscent of Ryusui's UMI NO SACHI. The impressions are good, but without the misa highlights of early editions. In excellent condition overall. This is a study piece and is priced accordingly., Good

(Ehon) Nakamura Fusetsu & Kawahigashi Hekigoto^
HAIGA HO^

Imprint: 1909

(EHON) NAKAMURA Fusetsu & KAWAHIGASHI Hekigoto. HAIGA HO. Tokyo: Kokado, 1909. 23 x 15.4 cm. String-bound Japanese style in flexible covers with stamped title. This visual and textual examination of the relationship between "haiga", haiku drawings, and the the haiku themselves was a collaborative effort between Fusetsu, a Western-style oil painter who was also perhaps the most eminent practitioner of haiga in his day, and Hekigoto, a noted haiku poet. They were both intimates of Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and leaders of the influential literary circle associated with HOTOTOGISU magazine. Counting the decorative title page, there are 13 full page color woodcuts after designs by Fusetsu, 40 calligraphed haiku by Hekigoto reproduced in woodcut and a 38 page scholarly discussion by Fusetsu, as well as a few collotypes. A remarkable piece both visually and for its significance for the development of a new literary and visual aesthetic for Japan in the 20th century. Overall, this copy is very good in the very scarce, original, pictorial wraparound dustwrapper, which is split at the spine with some loss., Very Good

Binding: Hardback

[EHON - Album] Ikeda Terukata, et al. IMAYO FUJIN-GA. Tokyo: Kokkeido, n.d. (c. 1900s). Decorated cloth-covered orihon folding album, with printed paper title label. 12.1 x 17.6 cm. There are twelve double-page images showing the chores and amusements of cultured wives and mothers of the day. The images have the dreamy and elegiac feeling that depictions of women in late-Meiji seem to share. The images are attributed to "Toshikata's companions", including Terukata [1883-1921], who did the majority of these prints. Toshikata (1866-1908), a student of both Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Watanabe Seitei, had many students and was an influential member of the ukiyoe genre in his day, as styles from many sources (Shijo, ukiyo-e, western-style) began to merge into the Nihonga of the 20th century. Terukata was an important member of the group around him. This copy has no colophon per se, but it appears to be complete overall. It is very good internally, in good impressions and color. A lovely example of the genre., Very Good

[EHON - Conchology] HIRASE Yoichiro^.
KAI SENSHU^

Imprint: 1914
Binding: Hardback

[EHON - Conchology] HIRASE Yoichiro. KAI SENSHU. Kyoto: Unsodo, Taisho 3- 11 [1914-22]. 24.8 X 17.8 cm. 4 vols., complete. Printed paper title labels, silk over boards. Orihon folding books of color woodcuts of shells. Each volume contains 20 double page prints. Though the English title would be "One Thousand Shells", there are only 400 illustrated in the set, supporting the theory that the work was originally planned for 10 volumes and never finished. The first three volumes are scarce (our volume one is dated 1914, volume two and three are dated 1915) but volume four, here the issue printed in 1922, is very hard to find. Thus a complete set, particularly in the clean condition this one is in, is, quite simply, rare. The preface is in Japanese, and the plate lists in bilingual Japanese and Latin. Hirase had a museum of shells and originally commissioned this lovely work from the master printers at Unsodo to commemorate its first anniversary. Very good, the covers are a bit worn, a bit of offsetting here and there. The printing was so exquisite and the expense of production so large, as to make it one of the jewels of 20th century woodblock production., Very Good

See Mitchell 324-5 for more on this bibliographically complex book. Resembles his "B" example in one volume. Hard to establish a chronology of the various issues as they all have the same colophon. There is a 4 page Yoshidaya Shimbei catalogue bound into the back of the book. Very good impressions, lovely delicate colors. A wonderful collaboration from these two great artists, alternating their designs in succession. Quite an unusual book. In a custom tied case., Very Good

[EHON MANUSCRIPT]
KAKINUMA KOHEI KAICHO^

[EHON MANUSCRIPT] SHIJO^ SCHOOL ALBUM. Fukuro-toji style string-bound album, 26.5 x 19.3 cm, consisting of 14 double page and 12 single page color images painted in a skillful Shijo^ manner, apparently a product of the mid-19th century. The majority of the images are of figures, with a significant minority of bird and flower studies. This work is very problematical: the cover once had a paper label, it is gone, but in its place, someone has brushed in faintly "Kakinuma Kohei Kaicho^" [The Pictorial Notebook of Kakinuma Kohei]. We have been unable to unearth any reference to a Kakinuma Kohei. In addition there are various kanbun-style poetical utterances on the backcover. However, it would seem that the covers have been added later, as the first and last paintings are both worn and soiled, as if they had been the outside covers themselves for a long time. Thus the inscriptions and the cover title are probably not contemporary with the work itself and may be of doubtful accuracy. In any case, the work is obviously done in the style of a printed "gafu", right down to the square-ruled sumi borders. Whether it was meant to be a "gako^" or painted preliminary from which an actual book was to be designed or whether it was a sketchbook done in the spirit of a printed work, the images are well designed and executed: the composition and brushwork are quite competent. More importantly, there is resident in almost every painting all the high energy and high spirits of mid-19th century Shijo^ at its best. As regards the temptation to call this work a skillful copy from an existent published gafu, none of the images seem to have appeared elsewhere. We cannot point to any work from which they could have been copied and neither can any other expert we have consulted. As for the question of "Kakinuma Kohei"'s identity or whether he was even the painter, there may never be a satisfactory answer. The album is lovely and, ultimately, may well prove enigmatic.

In color woodblock. Nicely done, albeit only a faint shadow of the original work, it captures some of its infectious good fun. Very good condition., Very Good

KANGA SHINAN, NIHEN

Imprint: 1811

(EHON) KAWAMURA Bumpo. KANGA SHINAN NIHEN. Kyoto: Hishiya Magobei, n.d. 3 vols. Though the afterword is dated 1810, this copy does not have the 1811 colophon listing several other booksellers besides the principal publisher, Hishiya Magobei. Rather the colophon lists Hishiya Magobei, alone. Our assumption from the colors and the colophon is that this is a somewhat later edition. A very clean and plesant copy. 26 x 17.5 cm. String-bound, Japanese style in yellow covers with paper labels. This "second series" of the KANGA SHINAN [Manual of Chinese-style Painting] was the only one illustrated by Bumpo and was published over thirty years after the first series, so it obviously stands on its own as an independent work. The simple designs are in sumi and light colors. The condition of the three volumes is very good (one title slip missing) in fair to good impression. One of the scarcer of Bumpo's works.
