[EHON] Sato^ SUISEKI
SUISEKI GAFU

Imprint: 1814
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

[EHON] Sato SUISEKI. SUISEKI GAFU. Bunka 11 [1814]. 25.6 X 18.8 cm. This copy of the first series of Suiseki's gafu of figures is a classic of the Shijo genre, universally praised. [See Mitchell pp 505,6; Hillier Vol.2, pp. 753-6; Holloway 51; Ryerson 379; Brown p.93] This copy is of a very good impression with excellent color. It differs from the Mitchell copy at page 505 as follows: It has yellow covers and the one page sumi images of pine and bamboo before and after the 40 color pages of "occupations" are replaced by a blank page instead of the pine print and Suiseki's printed signature and seal instead of the bamboo. There is no printed title label. This copy does have the "shotei" seal on the hashira throughout. Finally the colophon does list the same publishers as Mitchell's but Suiseki's name and seal appear the page before (instead of the bamboo design, as above) There is no mention of the nihen and sampen versions to come. The prefatory material and first five color images have very light waterstains. Overall, a very nice copy in a good printing and excellent colors of this cornerstone work of Shijo illustration. A very scarce and important work., Good

(EHON) Kawamura Bumpo^, artist.
TEITO^ GAKEI ICHIRAN

Imprint: 1809

[Ehon] Kawamura Bumpo, artist. TEITO GAKEI ICHIRAN. Osaka & Kyoto: Morimoto Tasuke (O), Chojiya Genjiro (K), Yoshida Shimbei (K) 1809 - [1816] 4 volumes. 25.5 x 16.5 cm. This set is identical to the Mitchell copy (p.518,519), save for the following: 1) There is no separate ad page before the colophon at the end of volume two; 2) Most of the poems in volumes three are sealed, while the Mitchell copy's were not. 3) Chojiya Genjiro replaces Ogawa Tazaemon of Osaka as second publisher in volume two. 4) The format of the colophon in volume four is almost identical to that of volume two and is dated 1809, including an ad for all three volumes of BUMPO GAFU as being in production, hence the ad had to be after 1813. Ogawa Tazaemon is listed as the second publisher. In any case, Chojiya Genjiro appears to have published some other Bumpo titles (see Mitchell/Ryerson). This is a handsome printing, particularly of the final two volumes, of intermediate age (late 1820's?, early 1830's?) The first two volumes are lovely as well and printed in a "Bunka style" and coloration. In addition, the covers, though apparently original and consistent (vols 1&2 and 3&4 are identical) do not appear to have been published at the same time, i.e., these books don't appear to have been issued as a mid-century four volume set (as most sets seen in the market appear to be). A few images have a color block or two missing, but overall quite handsome and effective. There has been a theory advanced that Chojiya Genjiro had not been involved with Bumpo's books until after 1837 [Ellis Tinios of Leeds in Print Collector's Quarterly, 9/94] - this set would seem to indicate a slightly earlier involvement. In a 20th century clasped chitsu case. The condition of the books with original title labels is quite clean.

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

ELIOT, CHARLES WILLIAM. ADDRESSES AT THE INAUGURATION OF CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT AS PRESIDENT OF HARVARD COLLEGE, Tuesday, October 19, 1869. Cambridge: Sever and Francis, 1869. 65 pp. 8vo. First edition. Stab- stiched pamphlet in printed wrappers, spine reinforced with archival tape. some shelfwear, faint dampstaining to lower margin of lower text block. During his 40 year tenure at Harvard Eliot created the Modern American University. He concentrated all undergraduate studies in the college and around it grouped the professional schools and research centers. Bachelor's degree became a prerequisite for all graduate and professional studies. His most radical reform was the introduction of "the elective system". In 1872 the degrees of Master of Arts, Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy were established. In 1890 Followed the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He transformed the Divinity School from a denominational training school for ministers into a non-sectarian institution of higher learning. Perhaps his most notable contributions were made with the reforms of the Law School (introducing the "case system") and the School of Medicine raising standards and adopting a four year obligatory course, laboratory work, written examinations clinical instruction and internships. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, ADDRESSED TO EVA LE GALLIENNE, DATED 27 MARCH

Imprint: 1953
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

EVA LE GALLIENNE Re: IBSEN ELIOT, T. S. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, ADDRESSED TO EVA LE GALLIENNE, DATED 27 MARCH 1953. A single sheet, 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, 32 typed lines on both sides of a self-folding 'Apsley' Air Letter form, custom printed with the Faber & Faber letterhead on one side of the sheet, and the closing lines and Eliot's signature on the top half of the reverse. Double matted and framed, 15 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches, on either side of a photo portrait of Eliot are a copy of the recto of the letter and the verso of the actual letter with Eliot's signature; thus making the full content of the letter readable. English-born American stage actress Eva Le Galliene (1899-1991) translated two Ibsen plays for Faber & Faber, HEDDA GABLER (1953) and THE MASTER BUILDER (1955) and provided a preface for each. Eliot's note is in reply to Miss Le Gallienne's, apparently after she had received a copy of HEDDA GABLER, "... We are delighted to know that you are pleased with the production of the book" and continues on sharing Faber's expectation for the translation, being confident "in its future lasting qualities." Eliot goes on to discuss the possibility of stage and film versions of THE MASTER BUILDER to be directed by George M. Hoellering (who had produced and directed the 1951 film adaptation of Eliot's play MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL) and to star Oskar Homolka, both of which seem to have been unrealized. There is a paragraph regarding the American rights to Miss Le Gallienne's translation and the availability of the Faber edition in American markets. Eliot ends with a note of gratitude: "I have just received the gramophone records through Lady Margaret D'Arcy's kindness, and look forward eagerly to playing them at the house of some friend who has a long-playing gramophone." He closes "with all best wishes, yours sincerely" and signs T. S. Eliot. A letter with good content, nicely displayed., Good

LATER CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY: 1800-1950, 3 VOLUMES

Imprint: 1986
Binding: Hardback

ELLSWORTH, Robert Hatfield. LATER CHINESE PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY: 1800- 1950, 3 VOLUMES. New York, 1986. 10.5 x 15", 3 vols, xvi; xviii; xxiii, 399; 369; 281 pp., 875 color plates, 118 text-figures, text in English with Chinese captions, index, cloth, all edges gilt in gold, brown decorative clamshell style box with tipped in color plates. Condition Fine. The culmination of more than three decades of study and collecting, the three-volume Later Chinese Painting and Calligraphy: 1800-1950 is one of the most important, sumptuous publications of Asian Art. Taking a period that has been ignored and undervalued by scholars, curators, and collectors, Robert Ellsworth has produced a work that not only forces us to re-examine all previous assessments of that tumultuous era in Chinese art, but promises to launch a new wave of interest in, and appreciation for, its unique achievements. Through more than 850 superb examples from his own collection, the author shows how exposure to Western art led, in painting, to an extraordinary new diversity and vitality, and how archeological discoveries in China fueled a dazzling renaissance in calligraphy. Two of the three volumes reproduce 550 paintings and 325 calligraphies, representing the work of every major artist of the period in full color. The extensive commentaries in the third volume include biographies of each artist. Every calligraphy, inscription, and seal is transliterated into precise English. The breadth and depth of fresh scholarship, the quality of the art, and the luxurious production combine to make Later Chinese Painting and Calligraphy: 1800-1950 one of the monumental achievements in art book publishing in our century: an essential source book for anyone interested in Asian art, and an object of permanent beauty and value. **Due to size and weight, the shipping cost is $30.00 (USA addresses) or $95.00 (non-USA addresses)., Fine
