FALCONER, William
SHIPWRECK, A POEM.

Imprint: 1811
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

FALCONER, William. THE SHIPWRECK, A POEM. Collated with earlier editions. With additional notes and illustrations, and a sketch of the author's life. Embellished with descriptive engravings, by Robert Dodd, Marine Painter. London: Printed for William Baynes ... by John Jackson, 1811. This edition illustrated by Dodd was first issued in 1808, and this copy is one of two editions that were issued in 1811. It reprints the third edition text of the poem, the last to be edited by the author. 18 engraved plates, 3 engraved vignettes, engraved half-title and dedication (to the "Elder Bretheren of the Corporation of Trinity House") pages, each with a vignette, and an engraved folding chart (26 x 31 cm). Quarto (27 x 21 cm). [2], xxxviii, 152 pp. Nineteenth-century three-quarter light brown calf, with gilt decoration and title on spine, and marbled sides. Heraldic bookplate of Christopher Harrison to front pastedown, with his ink signature on title-page. Binding shows a bit of wear on joints, but is sound. Light to moderate foxing to some text leaves, mostly those facing plates. William Falconer (1732-69), a Scottish seaman and poet, first published 'The Shipwreck,' his major poem, in 1762. Founded on his own experience (he was one of only three survivors of a wreck on a voyage from Alexandria to Venice), it tells in three cantos the story of a shipwreck on the coast of Greece. It was an immediate success, going through three editions in the author's lifetime, and reaching an eleventh edition in 1802. It's popularity continued into the nineteenth century where it appeared separately, as here with Dodd's illustrations, and in many collections. The third edition of 'The Shipwreck,' which is printed in this edition, was prepared by Falconer just before his final voyage and contains many alterations. He died at sea in 1769 when the his ship sank after rounding the Cape on its way to India.

FASHION - WOMEN'S - PERIODICAL
PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES ET LE CONFIDENT REUNIS

Imprint: 1847
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

[FASHION - WOMEN'S - PERIODICAL] LE PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES ET LE CONFIDENT REUNIS: TOME VII, NOS. 1-17, 22-24; TOME IX, NOS. 1-13, 15-17. Paris: Imprim. Schneider et Langrand, 1847 and 1849. Thirty-six issues illustrated with 72 lovely hand-colored engraved plates, of which 33 are by Heloise Leloir and 12 by Laure Colin Noel. Quarto. Text: 2,7-136,169- 192; 104,113-128,121-128 pp. 10 1/4 by 7 in. Nineteenth-century binding: quarter black morocco, marbled boards, gilt title on spine, marbled endpapers. The binding is shelfworn, with top joint is starting and lower joint tender. The first issue is missing four text pages; otherwise, despite some misleading errors in pagination, all text is present. Most issues have a timbre royal mark (a French duty stamp) on one text page (but not on the plates). The plates are generally clean and fresh; however, there are a few exceptions: 1. - Both plates in Vol. VII, no. 1, have old paper repairs on the inner margin, and the top fore-corner of one has been clipped; 2. - The two plates in Vol. VII, no. 2, have been trimmed 1/4" shy of the fore-edge of the bookblock; 3. - One plate in Vol. IX, no. 15, which is the only horizontal image in the entire volume, has been trimmed to the top-edge of the image at the fore-edge. LE PETIT MESSAGER DES MODES was a bi-weekly publication, appearing on the 1st and 16th of each month, comprised of eight pages of text, that was to include 22 engraved plates and 3 large patterns in each six-month period. This volume is bound without any of the large patterns and, instead, an additional plate has been inserted wherever a pattern is called for. These `extra' plates have been supplied from issues that are not included in this volume. Although most issues are complete with text and appropriate plates together, there are twelve instances in this volume, including the plates-for-patterns substitutions, of plates being misbound or of a plate from another issue replacing the expected plate. And so, while the plates are lovely and in very good condition, it is for these reasons that the volume is offered as is., Very Good
