FRANCE, Anatole
OEUVRES COMPLETES ILLUSTREES

Imprint: 1925
Binding: Paperback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

FRANCE, Anatole. OEUVRES COMPLETES ILLUSTREES DE ANATOLE FRANCE. Paris: Calmann-Levy, V.d. (1925-1933). Illustrated with wood-engravings by various artists. 22 out of 25 volumes, plus an extra suite of prints for volume XXI. 4to., paper wrappers. All volumes are foxed at the edges; some show occasional light foxing within the text, but the majority of the volumes are quite clean. The wrappers have toned and some show edgewear, and a few volumes light to moderate chipping to spines. Volume XXII is dampstained at the top edge throughout. The portfolio is dampstained; however, the prints stored within are not stained. Volume XXI shows just a touch of dampstaining to the bottom edge This edition was published under the direction of Gerard Le Prat. The text was revised, with bibliographic notes provided, by Leon Carias. All volumes, except for Volume XXI, are printed on specially made velin paper which is watermarked with the signature of Anatole France; Volume XXI is printed on Holland paper which also has the special watermark. The extra suite of prints contains all of the illustrations included in Volume XXI (contents: Le Genie latin and Les poemes du souvenir) by Louis Caillaud. They are printed on chine and housed in a separate folder. The first volume contains a wood-engraving frontispiece portrait of Anatole France after Edgar Chahine. This set lacks the final three volumes, numbers XXIII - XXV, Petit Pierre and Pages d'histoire et de litterature. This set is a graceful combination of illustration and type. The leading French illustrators and engravers of the day were employed in its manufacture. In addition to Caillaud and Chahine, the artists who illustrated these volumes are: Maxime Dethomas, E. Dufour, Xavier Prinet, Andre Marty, Edy Legrand, Carlegle, Roubille, Alfred Latour, Georges Leroux, Emilen Dufour, Hermann-Paul, Emile Colin, Gabriel Belot, Mirande, Bernard Naudin, and Maggie Salcedo. The engravers: J.-A. Hoffman, E. Gasperini, P. & A. Baudier, J. Malcouronne, Jean Vital-Proust, A. Latour, R. Dill.

FRITSCH, K. E. O. DENKMALER DEUTSCHER RENAISSANCE, PORTFOLIOS I, II, (III? missing front cover), IV AND V. Berlin: Ernst Wasmuth, 1882-1884. Each portfolio contains 25 loose plates, as issued (except for no. V., which is missing two plates). Red cloth spines, paper covered boards printed in black with table of contents on front covers. Photo reproductions of excellent large format (35 x 25 cm) images of urban architecture, from throughout the cities of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. Plates in good to very good condition; paper is brittle, and some of the plates have shallow chips to the edges, not affecting images (except for one plate with a larger chip to top corner of image). One portfolios is missing the front board, and therefore we have no way of knowing which number it is, or what should be included. The plates are listed on the front cover of each portfolio; since this unidentified portfolio is missing the cover, here is the list of plates: Aschaffenburg: Schloss (Portal im Sudwestflugel des Schlosshofes) Braunschweig: Haus um Hagenmarket Braunschweig: Kohlmarket Bremen: Gewerbehaus Coburg: Gymnasium Casimiranium Coburg: Regierungsgebaude (Anfang des XVII Jahrhunderts) Gustrow: Schloss (Hof- Ansicht) Heidelberg: Schloss, Friedrichsbau (Facade nach dem Schlosshof, sudfront) Heidelberg: Schloss, Friedrichsbau (Detail der facade nach dem Grossen Schloss-Altan, nordfront) Heidelberg: Schloss Otto Heinrichs-Bau (Facade nach dem Schlosshof) Heidelberg: Schloss Otto-Heinrichs-Bau (Detail vom Nordlichen Theil der Facade nach dem Schlosshof) Heidelberg: Schloss (Nordostecke des Schlosshofes) Karlsruhe: Ehemaliges Schloss Gottesau Lubeck: Portal eines Hauses Lubeck: Erker am Ratthause Lubeck: Ratthause (Vorbau an der Nordseite des Marktes) Nurnberg: Haus in der Adlerstrasse Nurnberg: Sogen.
