HARPER'S WEEKLY
HARPER'S WEEKLY. VOLUME X. FOR THE YEAR 1866.
Imprint: 1866
Binding:
Hardback
HARPER'S WEEKLY, A Journal of Civilization. Volume X, No. 471-522 (January 6 - December 29). For the Year 1866. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1866. Folio. (iv),832 pp. A wood-engraved title-page and an index for the entire year precede the weekly issues. Although the news coverage is dominated by the American Civil War, one of the more interesting events unrelated to the war is the laying of the first trans- Atlantic cable. Several issues contain illustrations by Thomas Nast, including the large double-page "Santa Claus and His Works" in the final issue. In addition there is a full page portrait of the Atlantic Baseball Club. The individual issues are sewn together. The original cloth- covered boards (blocked in blind, with gilt-stamped title to upper board) are present, but are worn, soiled, and detached; the backstrip is mostly missing. The paper is lightly age-browned, as usual, and mostly clean, with only occasional, very light foxing. A complete year of this illustrated periodical, it is offered as is.

[HASSHU^ GAFU]
BAICHIKU RANGIKU [SHIFU]
Imprint: 1720
[HASSHU GAFU]. BAICHIKU RANGIKU [SHIFU]. 28.1 x 19.4 cm. One volume [THE ALBUM OF PLUM, BAMBOO, RAN AND CHRYSANTHEMUM] only of eight volumes originally published in Ming-era China. The Ming edition is unobtainable and the first Japanese edition of 1672 virtually so. This is almost certainly one of the volumes of the 1710 Kyoto edition, printed by Nakagawa Mohei. HASSHU GAFU literally translates as A COLLECTION OF EIGHT ILLUSTRATED SKETCH BOOKS. The books in the collection had no intrinsic connection with each other, save that they were heavily illustrated in woodcut. Some, like this one, are done on a botanical theme, others are illustrated poetry collections. In any event, the HASSHU GAFU had a great deal of influence on the Chinese style painters of the early Edo period once it was published there, an influence that only started to fade upon the import of the color printed MUSTARD SEED GARDEN and TEN BAMBOO HALL. This copy has the original dark blue green covers, printed on a thin hard toshi paper, string-bound fukuro-toji Japanese-style with the original printed paper title label. Overall good condition, good impressions., Good

It is a very scarce book in a fragile binding. Hastings (1773 - 1812) was a poet of local celebrity in Lancaster, PA at the turn of the 19th century. [HAUTCHAMP, Barthelemy Marmont du]. HISTOIRE DU SYSTEME DES FINANCES SOUS LA MINORITE DE LOUIS XV pendant les annees 1719 & 1720, Precedee d'un Abrege de la Vie du Duc Regent, & du Sr. Law. The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1739. Six 12mo volumes in three. 204[2]312; [2]208,[4]286pp.+[1]ff; [xiv]294[xvii]246pp. Titles in red and black. Tipped in to Volume 4 is a fine satirical engraving of a street vendor with a huge assemblage of varied merchandise ("Admire la Forces"), which was publicly circulated in derision of monopolies. In volume 6, there is one long sheet (14.75 inches) with four numbered tables printed back to back. The Regent (the Duke of Orleans), concerned about the economic state of France, allowed a Scottish financier named John Law to open the Banque Generale (later the Banque Royale) and issue paper currency, new to France. Law created the Compagnie d'Occident, which controlled all trade and financial dealings in the extensive French Holdings along the Mississippi, and later extended to Africa, China, and the East Indies. He purchased the Banque Royale, and became Comptroller of all France's finances. The collapse of the company, due to inflation and excessive stock issues, was disastrous for the French, rich and poor. This detailed contemporary account includes two volumes of relevant documents: letters of patent, arrests, royal decrees, etc. Some slits to folding chart in Vol. 6, and a few marginalia, otherwise internally fine. Leather binding of the period, worn and dried, with externally cracked hinges and some spine losses. Library markings. Complete but needs rebinding. (Kress 4447)., Fine
