[ATLAS] Bridgeman, E.C. translated by Mitsukuri Ge
RENPO SHIRYAKU 2 vols.

Imprint: 1871

[ATLAS] Bridgeman, E.C. translated by Mitsukuri Genpo. RENPO SHIRYAKU 2 vols. To^kyo^, Zodiacal date of Meiji 4 [1871]. String-bound, Japanese- style, fukuro-toji. An interesting work by Bridgeman, the Chinese missionary, originally published in Chinese but here marked for reading as Japanese (kanbun). Thus not a translation as we might understand the term, but a long standing aid for literate Japanese to understand the original classical Chinese. With a number of b+w and some color maps of the USA, along with a text describing US history, culture, economics, etc. A bit of cover soiling outside and the scattered signs of insect damage internally, but overall a very good copy. Upon comparison to the original Japanese edition of 1861, there is not much to choose between them., Very Good

[ATOMIC POWER] USIS - ASAHI SHINBUNSHA
GENSHIRYOKU HEIWA RIYO^ NO SHIORI ATOM

Imprint: 1956
Binding: Paperback

[ATOMIC POWER] USIS - ASAHI SHINBUNSHA. GENSHIRYOKU HEIWA RIYO^ NO SHIORI ATOM. Magazine format in illustrated wrappers, 29.7 x 21.0 cm, guidebook to the first "ATOMS FOR PEACE" exhibition put on in Japan in accordance with President Eisenhower's outreach program aimed at domesticating nuclear energy. The exhibition was held in Hiroshima in 1956. There were models of atomic planes, trains, ships, factories, hospital procedures, both diagnostic and palliative, electric power plants etc., etc. Some of those plans still await future fruition, others are a part of the daily life of the world. But not all the swords were beaten into plowshares, as we all know, and the choice of Hiroshima as a venue must have been painful for many there, one would think. There is some wear, chipping and rubbing of the covers, about good overall., Good

Engraved title-page by Mathey precedes the letterpress title; another engraved plate opposite p. 676, and wood- engraved vignettes and initials throughout the text. "Obscoena e textu Ausoniano resecta" and indices follow the works. One 4to. volume: lxvii, 684, [2], 16, [152] pp. Contemporary boards, skillfully rebacked, with original gilt-stamped spine laid-down, marbled endpapers, all edges red. Ex library; only a bookplate and a discreet embossed stamp to t.p, and no other marks. A few, random gatherings are lightly age browned, and the boards show some scuffing and wear. However, it is clean and fresh overall, and in very good condition in a handsome binding. According to Brunet, this is a highly regarded edition of Ausonius' work., Very Good

[AVANT GARDE] UMEHARA Hakumei, editor.
BUNGEI ICHIBA [BUNGEI SHIJO^] Vol.3 #6.

Imprint: 1927
Binding: Paperback

[AVANT GARDE] UMEHARA Hokumei, editor. BUNGEI ICHIBA [BUNGEI SHIJO] Vol.3 #6. Wrappers, 21.7 x 15 cm. Tokyo, Showa2 [1927] First published in November of 1925, the BUNGEI ICHIBA [MARKET OF THE ARTS] unleashed its mordant humor on the literary world of Japan. The contents ran the gamut from literary gossip to the latest on Russian and European art and literary movements and theorists. At first solidly left wing, with contributions by such important figures as Murayama Tomoyoshi, the magazine lasted for 19 issues, into 1927, when Umehara took his interests into less political and more scandalous avenues and began publishing GROTESQUE magazine, the heart of the ero-guro movement. This Volume 3 #6 is nearing the end of the magazine's run and its content seems less daring than earlier issues, the pendulum seems to have swung to tradition. It might be considered that Umehara's fundamental impulse was anti- censorship, not necessarily anti-authoritarian. By the invasion of Manchuria in the early 1930's his sympathies had gone over to the army and his erotic journals were full of pompous justifications of war written by active figures in the military high command. This copy of the BUNGEI SHIJO is a bit edgeworn and slightly soiled, but quite good overall. Umehara, and his productions BUNGEI ICHIBA and GROTESQUE are important and interesting material for an understanding of the evolution going on from late Taisho into Showa., Good

[AVANT GARDE] UMEHARA Hakumei, editor.
GUROTESKU GROTESQUE Vol.1 #2.

Imprint: 1928
Binding: Paperback

[AVANT GARDE] UMEHARA Hokumei, editor. GUROTESUKU GROTESQUE Vol.1 #2. Wrappers, 21.7 x 15 cm. Tokyo, Showa 3 [1928] GROTESQUE is in one sense the successor to the important avant garde journal BUNGEI SHIJO, first published in November of 1925, At first solidly left wing, with contributions by such important figures as Murayama Tomoyoshi, the magazine lasted for 19 issues, into 1927, when Umehara took his interests into less political and more scandalous avenues and began publishing GROTESQUE magazine, the heart of the ero-guro movement. This second number barely reached the light of day as the first issue with its bare-breasted lovelies had been far too popular. It might be considered that Umehara's fundamental impulse was anti-censorship, not necessarily anti- authoritarian. By the invasion of Manchuria in the early 1930's his sympathies had gone over to the army and his erotic journals were full of pompous justifications of war written by active figures in the military high command and callous commentary on published photos of war atrocities were not uncommon. Umehara, and his productions BUNGEI ICHIBA and GROTESQUE are important and interesting material for an understanding of the evolution going on from late Taisho into Showa. It is quite clear that Murayama and Umehara, who had cooperated at the dawn of the avant garde, ended up going in very different directions. Overall good condition., Good

Imprint: 1930
Binding: Hardback

[AVANT-GARDE] ITAGAKI Takao & HORINO Masao. YUSHUSEN NO GEIJUTSU Shakaigaku-teki Bunseki. Tokyo, Tenninsha, Showa 5 [1930]. 181+ pp. 20.3 x 15.7 cm, bound in yellow cloth. This book, roughly translated as THE ART OF THE LUXURY OCEAN LINER, A Sociological Analysis, is a fascinating and important work of criticism. A combination of the work of Itagaki, the first critic of avant-garde photography in Japan and Horino, whose important photographic work appears here in a book for the first time, it is a significant book, indeed. There are some 120 halftone photo- illustrations and a photomontage dust-wrapper, printed in black and red. The book itself is good, with some sizing loss to the covers, the dust- wrapper has some small loss at the head of the spine. Scarce in any condition, virtually unobtainable as here, with the original jacket and printed slipcase. Complete., Good
