Edition: First Edition
Binding:

BARBAULD, Anna Letitia. GLI' INNI GIOVENILI della Signora Anna Letizia Barbauld Tradotti in Italiano ad uso de' fanciulli che imparano la lingua. Nuova edizione, corretta e migliorata da Pietro Bachi. Boston, Carter and Hendee, 1832. Square 12mo. vi,110pp. An Italian edition of Mrs. Barbauld's "Hymns in Prose for Children" had been published in London in 1819 and 1829, by a translator identified only as "un Toscano." Pietro Bachi, an instructor at Harvard, finding the London version wanting in accuracy and completeness, produced this "nuova edizione," with his own preface and an extract from the preface to the London edition. The "nuova editione" is probably in fact the first edition of his own version, as no others appear in the OCLC. The purpose was to help young people learn the Italian language, through the use of a text with which they were already familiar. Original mulberry glazed cloth boards with printed label. Some light foxing, and faint waterstain to edge of some pages; backstrip starting. Quite rare.

BARRIE, J. M. AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED. One sheet, white paper, creased once where the sheet had been folded. 6 1/4 by 4 inches. Writing to both sides. Letterhead: 133, Gloucester Road. S. W. Date: 24 March 1902. Mounted in a window mat and framed, with a contemporary photograph of J. M. Barrie. The letter is addressed to William Dana Orcutt, American author and type designer, who had invited Barrie to write an introduction to "Macbeth" in an elaborate edition of Shakespeare's Works which he was planning to publish at the University Press. Barrie politely declines the offer saying "the thing tempts me, but I feel that I lack the skill to write to much purpose on a subject that has already been so nobly handled." Barrie and Orcutt were members of the Garrick Club and maintained a congenial relationship for many years; this letter is from early in their acquaintance. The letter is signed "Yours sincerely, J.M. Barrie." The photograph, a portrait almost in profile, shows Barrie as Orcutt describes him at that time: "a sensitive little man, with a rather long neck, hair receding from his forehead, and a heavy mustache." (Orcutt. From My Library Walls.).

BARRIE, J. M.
A TILLYLOSS SCANDAL
Imprint: 1893
Binding: Paperback
BARRIE, J. M. A TILLYLOSS SCANDAL. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, n.d. [1893]. First American edition, first state; paper wrapper issue, with the publisher's East Tenth Street address on t.p. and front cover, and a list of seven other Barrie titles on the back cover. 270 pp. Octavo, buff paper wrappers printed in brown. Quite clean internally, though the final few leaves have a sliver of dampstaining along the fore- edge. Wrappers show moderate all-over soiling and have darkened slightly at spine. Near-fine overall and uncommon. A Tillyloss Scandal is an unauthorized collection of stories and articles that had appeared in periodicals during the years 1887-92. A first issue in a paper wrapper format was customary at that time in American printing due to the prevailing practice of piracy. Publishers rushed paper copies through the printer and bindery in an effort to quickly deliver them to newsdealers as a means of standardizing the market. (Cutler 33)., Fine

BARRIE, J. M.
TWO OF THEM
Imprint: 1893
Binding:
Hardback
BARRIE, J. M. TWO OF THEM. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, 5 and 7 East Sixteenth Street, (1893). First American edition; the unauthorized, cloth issue. Illustrated with 10 plates. 282 pp., [4] pp. publisher's adv. Octavo, blue cloth over bevelled boards, gilt-title at spine. One leaf has a marginal tear (p. 87). The spine is very lightly sunned; and the cloth shows just a touch of wear at fore-corners. Nonetheless, it is a remarkably clean and crisp copy overall, and near fine. Cutler calls this one of the most curious of all unauthorized American editions of Barrie because it is primarily a reprint of material recently published in An Auld Licht Manse and A Tillyloss Scandal, which is probably the reason it was not widely printed, and is evidence of the publisher's blatant attempt to capitalize on Barrie's popularity for profit. The cloth issue was briefly preceeded by sheets bound in a paper wrapper format. This was customary at that time in American printing, due to the prevailing practice of piracy, and an attempt to quickly standardize the market. (Cutler 36, p. 91-92)., Fine

WINDOW IN THRUMS
Imprint: 1892
Binding: Paperback
BARRIE, J. M. A WINDOW IN THRUMS. New York: Lovell, Coryell & Company, 43, 45, and 47 East Tenth Street, (1892). The Belmore Series, Number 1. The publication date is printed on the wrappers. 234 pp., + [6] pp. publisher's adv. 8vo., printed paper wrappers. Pencil ownership on upper wrapper. Text leaves are lightly and evenly toned, with some occasional, light foxing in margins. The wrappers are sunned at spine and edges, starting at folds, edgeworn at heel and crown, and partially detached. Nonetheless, a very good copy of an unauthorized American edition from the firm which eventually became the United States Book Company ("a huge organization which combined legitimate and unethical publication methods with varied and contradictory enterprise") and preceding the authorized Barrie editions which were published by Charles Scribner's Sons, starting in 1896. (Cutler, pp. 6-9, 45)., Very Good
