SAYERS, Dorothy L.
Busman's Honeymoon

Imprint: NY, HarperCollins, c1937, 1995
Binding: Softcover; Mass Market PB

This is 'the last of the Wimsey mysteries completed by Dorothy Sayers. And while murder is hardly the best way for the newlyweds to begin their honeymoon, it is certainly the most appropriate. Their married life begins when the former owner of their newly acquired estate is found quite dead in the cellar. What Lord Peter hopes to be a private and romantic stay in the country becomes a baffling case, what with a misspelled "notise" to the milkman and a dead man who has not a spot of blood on his smashed skull and not a pence less than six hundred pounds in his pocket. In short, as Lord Peter says, "Back to the old grind. Rigor mortis and who-saw-him-last, blood-prints, information received and it-is-my-dooty-to-warn-you." Together, the newlyweds pursue the truth to its less than happy ending even as they look ahead to their lives together.' SCARLETT, Susan [Noel Streatfeild]
Babbacombe's

Imprint: Edinburgh, Greyladies, c1941, 2014
Binding: Softcover; Trade PB

A very nice copy with faint edgewear and rubbing. ; Her children's books are well known and loved but this author also wrote a dozen 'light romance' novels under the pseudonym Susan Scarlett. This heart-warming romance was originally published in 1941.

Into the heart of the Carson family, close, hard-working and happy, comes their disruptive and selfish cousin Dulcie, with her decidedly cheap values. George and Janet try to make her welcome and treat her as one of their own; they find her work in Babbacombe’s department store where eldest daughter Beth is just beginning her first job in Gowns, but they struggle to make allowances for her outrageous behaviour. For it is Dulcie who takes pleasure in humiliating young Girda at her school concert; it is Dulcie who jealously tries to blight the blossoming romance between Beth and the new man in Cooked Meats, David Babbacombe himself. But then it is not Dulcie, who doesn’t understand kindness and love, who lives happily ever after. This title now out-of-print. ; Recommended, especially if you enjoy novels set in department stores (we do)., 262 pages, Near Fine

SETTERFIELD, Diane
The Thirteenth Tale : A Novel

Imprint: NY, Atria, 2006
Edition: Book Club Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Spine ends bumped, a few smudges to page edges; interior clean and bright. Dust wrapper faintly edgeworn. A very nice copy indeed.; From the dust wrapper:'All children mythologize their birth...So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's collection of stories, which are as famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale as they are for the delight and enchantment of the twelve that do exist.

The enigmatic Winter has spent six decades creating various outlandish life histories for herself -- all of them inventions that have brought her fame and fortune but have kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she at last wants to tell the truth about her extraordinary life. She summons biographer Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth, hidden by those who loved her most, remains an ever-present pain. Struck by a curious parallel between Miss Winter's story and her own, Margaret takes on the commission.

As Vida disinters the life she meant to bury for good, Margaret is mesmerized. It is a tale of gothic strangeness featuring the Angelfield family, including the beautiful and willful Isabelle, the feral twins Adeline and Emmeline, a ghost, a governess, a topiary garden and a devastating fire.

Margaret succumbs to the power of Vida's storytelling but remains suspicious of the author's sincerity. She demands the truth from Vida, and together they confront the ghosts that have haunted them while becoming, finally, transformed by the truth themselves.

"The Thirteenth Tale" is a love letter to reading, a book for the feral reader in all of us, a return to that rich vein of storytelling that our parents loved and that we loved as children.', 406 pages, Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust wrapper

SHAFFER, Mary Ann And Annie Barrows
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The

Imprint: NY, The Dial Press, 2008
Edition: Second Printing
Binding: Hardcover

“ I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways." Highly recommended. Basis for the film "Guernsey" directed by Mike Newell and featuring Lily James and Matthew Goode.

Clipped dust wrapper is sunned and edgeworn with several small chips and tears. One closed tear repaired with tape by previous owner. Cloth binding and matching dw have a wonderful illustration by Robert Ball. ; There was once a stepping stone in the little village of Gillenham. Quite by accident, Professor Pounce found a reference to the stone in a manuscript journal from 1803 in the attic of a country house (while his hosts were looking for him to play bridge). Binding: Softcover; Trade PB

A nice copy. No spine or cover creases, covers lightly edgeworn, a few faint smudges to page edges. This edition has a short list of discussion questions and a very short biography of the author. ; Basis for the BBC film released in 2003. The first novel by this author, who was best known for '101 Dalmations', written while she lived in the United States in the 1940's. This is one of the most enchanting and unusual coming of age stories. Set in a three-quarters ruined 600-year-old castle in the English countryside, the book is the journal of seventeen-year-old Cassandra. She is teaching herself to write, and does very well indeed at "capturing the castle. " She is growing up amid poverty along with her twenty-one year old sister Rose, her smart younger brother, her stepmother model, Topaz, and her eccentric father, stymied by writer's block for many years. Cassandra candidly chronicles the changes wrought by the arrival of Simon from America, heir to the nearby manor house and their landlord, along with his brother Neil and voluble mother. The devoted and shockingly handsome Stephen (penurious castle help), a charming Vicar, and a greasy photographer from London, round out the characters. ;
The author of the delightful 'I Capture the Castle' provides us with another enchanting novel. Devotees of D.E. Stevenson will smile at the similarities between secretary-housekeeper Jane Minton and many a Stevenson heroine. Jane is warmly welcomed by two brothers, two sisters and a pair of loyal maids to an English country home that is as comfortable as one could wish. Disaster strikes the absentee father, though, giving the opportunity for all five main characters to find their feet in life. It is hard to say which character holds the most compelling (and amusing) story. The steps each sibling and Jane take to make their way in life are wholly engrossing. It is guaranteed the reader will find kinship with Merry, Drew, Clare, Richard or Jane, as each of their adventures is relayed in turn., 377 pages, As New

Town in Bloom, The

Imprint: Boston, Little, Brown & Company, 1965
Edition: First US Edition
Binding: Hardcover

"A beguiling tale, at once nostalgic and candid about coming of age and the healing effects of time, this 1965 novel reveals much of the author's love of theater in the story of a determined young Lancashire girl arriving in London. Mouse never did fully suit her nickname—tiny she may have been, but timid, never. Within 24 hours of her arrival in the city, she had bluffed her way into an audition at a famous theater, infuriated its forceful young stage director, and amused its kind (if quite amoral) actor-manager. She won, not a part, but at least a toehold as a junior secretary. Soon she has befriended Molly, a baby-faced six-footer, and elegant, ambitious Lilian. Later there was also Zelle—rich, generous, enigmatic, and responsible for an outing to Suffolk village pageant which proved a turning point for them all.
Born near Manchester, Dodie Smith was already bitten by the theater bug when she entered St Paul's Girls School in London, and though she went on to become a remarkably unsuccessful actress, she later became a playwright and novelist of considerable acclaim, beloved for her children's book 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians'. Her first novel, 'I Capture the Castle'—was voted #82 of Britain's 100 best-loved novels as part of the BBC's Big Read—was followed by a string books known for their vivacious style and warm characters."
