The Goodwood Estate Archives in Three Volumes a Catalogue

Imprint: Chichester, The West Sussex County Council, 1984
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

A scarce and complete set in red cloth hardcovers and thick mtching illustrated red paperjackets. With a foreword by His Grace the duke of Richmond and Gordon. The first volume of the catalogue covers the development and administration of the Goodwood estates during the 17th and 19th centuries and is especially rich in its collection of maps and manorial papers. Second volumes consisits of personal records and family papers.Duke the estate had grown to some 17,000 acres in Boxgrove, Westhampnett, East Dean, Singleton, Tangmere, Lavant and West Itchenor. Today the estate has a world-famous racecourse, the newly re-opened motor racing circuit and the home of the annual festival of speed, and was until recently the venue for international dressage. The estate archives are chiefly notable for the fine late eighteenth-century estate surveys by Thomas Yeakell and William Gardner. Tangmere East Field Map, 1791 The family holds four Dukedoms - Richmond, Lennox, Gordon and Aubigny - and the surviving archives reflect this. They include the correspondence of the five Dukes of Gordon and an extensive archive of the Aubigny estates. The correspondence collections are especially rich for the 2nd. Duke, 1701-1750, Master of the Horse, literary and artistic patron and Newcastle's agent in the county, the 5th. Duke, 1791-1860, member of Grey's reforming ministry and later a leader of the protectionist party, and the 6th. Duke, 1818-1892, leader of the Conservative party in the House of Lords and first Secretary for Scotland. A fine series of accounts with local and London tradesmen survive for the first three Dukes.. Suffolk County Wills: Abstracts of the Earliest Wills upon Record in the County of Suffolk, Massachusetts from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register

Imprint: Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., Genealogical Pub Co, 1984
Edition: First Thus
Binding: Hardback

Based on a long series of will abstracts that appeared over a period of 45 years in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, this work encompasses what amounts to the first 30 years or so of the Suffolk County, Massachusetts, estate records (1640-1670). Altogether, the series refers to some 12,000 persons with regard to family relationships. Since this series of abstracts appeared in more than 60 issues of the Register, it has remained obscure and out of reach of the customary researcher. The virtue of this volume is that it gathers up the various installments and makes them accessible via an added index of names. Genealogists researching the period 1640 to 1670 will find this a useful and informative reference tool, especially since some of the original Suffolk County wills are no longer available. EXCELLENT COPY, AS NEW in blue cloth covers. 432 pages, fully indexed.. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover
