Indeed the chronological scope of Female Communities suggests that an interest in utopian or quasi-utopian female communities in early modern Britain and a dynamic movement between imagined and actual communities of women is related to the unrest and Civil War in the 1640s. Hence the point that Lee Cullen Khanna makes in her incisive foreword: that "social and political instability" had "potential liberating effects ... for women's efforts to gain power" (xiii).
