Avery, Kevin J.; Kelly, Franklin
Hudson River School Visions: The Landscapes of Sanford R. Gifford

Imprint: Cumberland, Rhode Island, U.S.A., Yale Univ Pr, 2003
Binding: With Dust Jacket

Fine as New and very heavy. Sanford Robinson Gifford was a leading Hudson River School artist. His love of nature first surfaced as a youth growing up in Hudson, New York, and, together with his admiration for the works of Thomas Cole, inspired him to become a landscape painter. Influenced as well by J. M. W. Turner and by trips to Europe in the 1850s, Gifford's art was termed "air painting," for he made the ambient light of each scene-color saturated and atmospherically enriched-the key to its expression. Gifford was a founder of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the time of his death, he was so esteemed by the New York art world that the Museum mounted an exhibition of his work-its first accorded an American artist-and published a Memorial Catalogue that for nearly a century remained the principal source on the artist. Now, to coincide with a long-overdue exhibition of Gifford's work, an important new book is being issued. This volume features essays examining Gifford's position in the Hudson River School, his Catskill and Adirondack subjects, his patrons, and his adventures as a traveler both at home and abroad. More than seventy of the artist's best-known sketches and paintings are discussed and reproduced in color.. Book Condition: Fine as New. Jacket: Fine as New

Early roamntic Chinese novel by an unknown author known only by pseudonym. In the "Books of Genius," a famous collection of the best novels and plays begun about 1644 by the publisher-savant Tsin Cheng-tran, who was decapitated in 1662 at the age of thirty-five for the viloence of his opinions, it stands second in the list of ten. The novel has gone through numerous adaptations and translations, and has had several different titles, including "Traditions of a Perfect Couple," "The Pleasing Union," and "The Fortunate Union." This translation is the first to be made directly from Chinese into French, with all the poems, then translated into English. With simple black-and-white illustrations reproduced from those made in the sixteenth century by Ts'iou Yng (Che-cheou), the most celebrated painter of the Ming Dynasty. Attractive silver lettering and blindstamping on spine.. Book Condition: Very Good
