Caruso
Caricatures By Enrico Caruso: Complete Collection Issued with the Approval of the Artist

Imprint: New York, La Follia Di New York, 1922
Edition: First American Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition. Extremely scarce original First Edition of this very large size (10 X 15 inches) book of Caruso's caricatures. Includes auto-caricatures and drawings of famous figures in the opera worl d as well as a wide range of contemporary celebrities, both royal and non. This book was published by Signor Marziale Sisca of Lafayette Street in New York City and opens with a letter of Giulio Gatti -Casazza the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera Company . The book is inscribed in blue ink " New York City December 30th, 1924 PRESENTED TO THE GREAT ARTIST LUDWIG SATZ FROM YOUR FRIEND ELIAS ROTHSTEIN". Ludwig Satz was a highly renowned actor and singer of the New York Yiddish Theater. His films are still commonly shown at Film Festivals throughout the world and his recordings of Yiddish music are still sold today. This book is non paginated but probably counts about 200 pages and is printed on extra-heavy stock. Included in the rear is also a reprint of Caruso's orginal letter writte n to the publisher of the book fifteen days before his death in which he included his last sketch of the famous Sizilian actor Giovanni Grasso. As to condition: the book is bound in faux-leather red/b lack marbled covers and the front hinge is loose. There is a nasty round waterstain on the last page close to the spine which extends through about 10 pages and has disolved some of the paper in that area. Sounds worse than it is because in reality, it does not affect the sketches but only the advertisements in the rear section.

Two were infantry, the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth, and two Cavalry, the Ninth and Tenth. The Tenth Cavalry was mostly stationed in the west to keep order among the Native Americans who called them Buffalo Soldiers. There has been a continuing great interest in the deeds and motivations of these men in the face of rampant prejudice and social seperation. The Tenth's service has been perpetuated in the present order of battle of the US Army and there still is an active 10th Cavalry though it is now integrated. As nice a copy as you are likely to see.
