[ A Flavia de Luce Mystery - 7] Banished! is how twelve-year-old Flavia de Luce laments her predicament, when her father and Aunt Felicity ship her off to Miss Bodycote's Female Academy, the boarding school that her mother, Harriet, once attended across the sea in Canada. The sun has not yet risen on Flavia's first day in captivity when a gift lands at her feet. Flavia being Flavia, a budding chemist and sleuth, that gift is a charred and mummified body, which tumbles out of a bedroom chimney. Now, while attending classes, making friends (and enemies), and assessing the school's stern headmistress and faculty (one of whom is an acquitted murderess), Flavia is on the hunt for the victim's identity and time of death, as well as suspects, motives, and means. Rumors swirl that Miss Bodycote's is haunted, and that several girls have disappeared without a trace. When it comes to solving multiple mysteries, Flavia is up to the task - but her true destiny has yet to be revealed. 448p... Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Trade Paperback

Unholy Ground

Imprint: Toronto, Collins, 1989
Edition: 1st Canadian Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

When Arthur Combs is found murdered in his cottage just outside Dublin, police think he must have surprised a burglar. The 73-year-old expatriate retiree lived a solitary existence with few friends, but no enemies. Or so it seems when Detective Sergeant Minogue is assigned to the case. Minogue wonders why the cottage was so desperately ransacked and notes that there is an almost paramilitary precision in the way Combs was strangled. As the investigation gains momentum it becomes clear that this "terribly ordinary man" is of extraordinary interest to British intelligence. When MI5 tries to put a lid on the Combs affair they underestimate the tenacity of the unorthodox but brilliant detective. Even if it means going up against the prime minister herself, Minogue is determined to discover what Britain's spymasters are doing in Dublin.281p.. Book. Book Condition: As New. Binding: Hardcover. Bratton, Daniel
32 Short Views of Mazo de La Roche

Imprint: Toronto, ECW Press, 1996
Edition: 1st Can Ed.
Binding: Softback

This unconventional biography of the woman who wrote Jalna and other chronicles of the Whiteoak family, approaches her life from multiple angles, including an interview with an old neighbour of the subject; critical commentary on her texts; photographs; conversations with the last living relatives of Mazo and her cousin, Caroline Clement; and a chronology and bibliography. This book draws on the research of earlier biographers, but Daniel Bratton broadens the scope of the discussion to include new areas of investigation. Besides archival research, he has reinterviewed subjects interviewed by previous biographers, and tracked down previously withheld information. He has also explored, as no one else has done, the geographical settings of Mazo"s life and fictions, looking at them from a new perspective. The real strength of this book, however, which gives it an importance beyond de la Roche studies and Canadian literature, is its innovative format. Bratton"s approach will recommend the book to those interested in the theory and practice of biography. It can be read as a book about life-writing, as well as a writing of the life of Mazo de la Roche. 185p. illus. bibliography. index. Laid in is a 1939 postcard of Benares Historic House.. Book. "Banished to the Empire's farthest outpost, veteran warrior Paulinus Maximus defends The Wall of Britannia from the constant onslaught of belligerent barbarian tribes. Bravery, loyalty, experience, and success lead to Maximus" appointment as "General of the West" by the Roman emperor, the ambition of a lifetime. But with the title comes a caveat: Maximus needs to muster and command a single legion to defend the perilous Rhine frontier. On the opposite side of the Rhine River, tribal nations are uniting; hundreds of thousands mass in preparation for the conquest of Gaul, and from there, a sweep down into Rome itself. Only a wide river and a wily general keep them in check. With discipline, deception, persuasion, and surprise, Maximus holds the line against an increasingly desperate and innumerable foe. Friends, allies, and even enemies urge Maximus to proclaim himself emperor. He refuses, bound by an oath of duty, honor, and sacrifice to Rome, a city he has never seen. But then circumstance intervenes. Now, Maximus will accept the purple robe of emperor, if his scrappy legion can deliver this last crucial victory against insurmountable odds. The very fate of Rome hangs in the balance. (originally published 1970). Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Soft cover

Brewer, David
Greece, the Hidden Centuries: Turkish Rule from the Fall of Constantinople to Greek Independence

Imprint: London, I.B. Tauris, 2010
Edition: 1st UK Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

For almost four hundred years, between the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Greek War of Independence, the history of Greece is shrouded in mystery: distorted by Greek writers and largely neglected by others. What was life really like for the Greeks under Ottoman rule? Was it a period of exploitation and enslavement for the Greeks until they were finally able to rise up against Turkish rule, as is the traditional, Greek nationalistic view? Or did the Greeks derive some benefit from Turkish rule? How did the Greeks and Turks co-exist for so long? And, why are Greek attitudes towards Venice, who also controlled much of Greece for many of these years, so different? In this wide-ranging yet concise history David Brewer explodes many of the myths about Turkish rule of Greece. He places the Greek story in its wider, international context and casts fresh light on the dynamics of power not only between Greeks and Ottomans but also between Muslims and Christians, both Orthodox and Catholic, throughout Europe. This absorbing and riveting account of a crucial period will ensure that the history of Greece under Turkish rule is no longer hidden.. 308p. bibliography index. Paper slightly age toned, else fine.. "For the Greeks, the fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire was a cruel business, and its consequences far-reaching. Today's Greece is much more the child of that struggle than it is of the Classical period we know so much better. Because of Ottoman oppression and its brutal end, hostility to Turkey still smoulders, as does suspicion that foreign powers manipulate Greece for their own ends. For much of the war the Greek cause looked hopeless. The rebels could call only on lightly armed merchant ships and a long tradition of brigandage, which seemed no match for a formidable empire. Foreign philhellenes joined the Greek cause but foreign governments cared less for the Greeks than for the stability of Europe, hard-won by Napoleon's defeat. Nevertheless the Greeks won victories at sea, largely due to their use of terrifying fireships, and on land under the leadership of the charismatic Kolokotroms. Civil war then broke out among the Greeks, and for a time Kolokotroms swapped his tent for a prison cell. But support for Greece was growing, as all Europe was moved by Turkish massacres, by the death of Byron, most famous philhellene of all, and by the bloody invasion of the Peloponnese by Ottoman troops brought in by sea from Egypt. The governments of Europe now demanded an end to the fighting, and an allied fleet under Admiral Codrington sailed to meet the Ottoman navy at Navarino Bay. Nervous fingers fired inevitable shots, sixty Turkish ships were sent to the sea bed, and Greek freedom was finally assured. This is a powerful, fearsome and inspiring story, and David Brewer's book covers it fully for the first time in over a century, dealing evenhandedly with the courage, cunning and barbarism of Greeks and Turks alike." 393p. illus maps.bibliography.index (name on ffep, else fine ). Blue at the Mizzen

Imprint: London, HarperCollins, 1999
Edition: 1st UK Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

The title of this book, which seems to dance in the breeze, intimates that Jack Aubrey, lucky Jack Aubrey, is going to win the prize on which he has long set his heart. For once at the outset of the story he is neither financially embarrassed nor under some unmerited professional cloud. But time is gaining on him. His spirits, his energy, his zest for life and its pleasures are not what they were. He has reached the top of the Captain's list and the odds against his promotion to flag rank are lengthening. On the other hand, his old shipmate Stephen Maturin has lost none of his spark. Recovering from the loss of his wife, he finds passion for natural history happily combines with a tenderer emotion. And in the revolutionary politics of South America, whither the Surprise is bound, his expertise in intelligence work is indispensable.262p.. Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hardcover. O'Brian,Patrick
The Final, Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey

Imprint: London, HarperCollins, 2005
Edition: 1st Pbk Edition
Binding: Softback

"Here is the final, partial installment of the Aubrey/Maturin series. Blue at the Mizzen (novel #20) ended with Jack Aubrey getting the news, in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. The next novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of the author's death, would have been the chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. The three chapters left on O'Brian's desk at the time of his death are presented here both in printed version-including his corrections to the typescript-and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript to include a duel between Stephen Maturin and an impertinent officer who is courting his fiancée. Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humor, and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end.Foreword by William Waldegrave xiv.136p.. Dark Moment

Imprint: New York, Macmillan., 1952
Edition: Book Club Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

Interesting novel set in Turkey and covering the end of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the Young Turks and Ataturk.Ann Bridge has written a number of novels set in interesting locations, which she knew as the wife of a diplomat and which she describes well. Although the social ambiance of her early works (1930's) may reflect the attitudes of that time, those set in later periods display characters with an appalling assumption of social superiority and of patronising condescension that seems totally inappropriate in the modern world, and which make the stories seem rather too dated in style..
