Divry, Demosthenes Konstantinopoulou
Dialogoi Anglo-Ellenikoi Thylakiou = Pocket Greek-English Dialogues

Imprint: New York, D.C.Divry, 1914
Edition: 10th ed..
Binding: Hardback

A very compact pocket sized volume, first published in 1913, for Greek immigrants to America. Useful information about the USA (Names of States and their capitals, a glossary of business terms etc.]. precede the dialogues with useful phrases and sentences organized into helpful topics and arranged in 3 columns : In Greek, an English translation, and then a pronunciation guide in the Greek alphabet. Amongst all the many practical phrases and useful vocabulary lists is this interesting example : "Have you ever had Boston beans with brown bread" [p.191] which must have introduced many newly arrived Greeks to the delights of the local version of the familiar Greek Fasoulada! 430p. The name of a previous owner, a student at Canso Academy in Nova Scotia between 1923 and 1924, is inside the detached, scuffed and worn front cover - it was obviously VERY well used. The ffep is missing but otherwise the text is neat and complete. A nice period example of the kind of publications available to assist new Greek arrivals in America. Doherty, Paul
Alexander the Great : The Death of a God

Imprint: London, United Kingdom, Constable, 2004
Edition: 1st UK Edition.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

What or Who Really Killed the Young Conqueror of the Known World? [Alternative title " The Death of Alexander the Great] May 323 BC Alexander of Macedon fell ill at Babylon. Ten days later, aged only 33, he was dead. In the previous decade this military genius from a small and unimpressive kingdom to the north west of Greece had raged like a wolf through the Persian empire, conquering the lands of the Middle East, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran, his armies penetrating into western Pakistan and the north-west frontier of India. In a compelling and readable account, Paul Doherty analyzes this enigmatic conqueror and examines the circumstances surrounding the young king's final hours. The traditional belief is that Alexander died of alcohol poisoning or was the victim of an acute bout of malaria. But were there other, more sinister factors involved? A master of vivid and exciting narrative and a skilled historical analyst, Doherty offers a thrilling new perspective on the mysterious death of one of the greatest heroes the world has ever seen. 236p. bibliography.index.. The Soul Slayer

Imprint: London, Headline, 1998
Edition: 1st Pbk Edition
Binding: Softback

Soul Slayer: from medieval lore and legend, if a magician can take out the heart of his victim before death, and the victim does not die in a state of grace, the warlock can call upon that soul to do his bidding. Eighteen year old Rebecca Lennox the daughter of a former priest, is neglected and feared by the villagers of Dunmow in Essex. They regard her as cursed, by both her hare lip and her gift of second sight. Rebecca finds solace in the statue of St Michael the Archangel, to whom she prays devotedly within the sanctity of her old parish church. But when a young Catholic priest arrives in the village it seems that she has finally found a mortal confidant. Michael is not repelled by her infirmity and his charm and gentleness remind her of her beloved statue. Then changes come to Dunmow. A new parson is appointed -- more interested in the black arts than the teachings of religion. For Henry Frogmore holy orders are merely a convenient cover for his nefarious activities, but in Rebecca and Michael he finds powerful opponents. And in the ensuing struggle the price for each of them is all too heavy. Text clean and neat, but paper covers slightly scuffed. Book. Book Condition: Good>Very Good. Binding: Pbk

Exploring European Frontiers: British Travellers in the Age of Enlightenment

Imprint: London, Palgrave Macmillan, 2000
Edition: 1st UK Edition.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

The explorations of eighteenth-century travellers to the 'European frontiers' were often geared to define the cultural, political, and historical boundaries of 'European civilization.' In an age when political revolutions shocked nations into reassessing what separated the civilised from the barbaric, how did literary travellers contemplate the characteristics of their continental neighbours? Focusing on the writings of British travellers, we see how a new view of Europe was created, one that juxtaposed the customs and living conditions of populations in an attempt to define 'modern' Europe against a 'yet unenlightened' Europe.
