Deletanville, Thomas
A New French Dictionary in two parts: the first French and English: the second, English and French

Imprint: various. Bryer, H (printer), London, 1814
Edition: 5th or later Edition.
Binding: Hardback

The dictionary has a marbled board cover with leather edges at the front and quarter spine. The cover is much worn on its body and edges. The leather corners are much worn about through to the board body. The back cover is also much worn to the board base. The leather spine is cracked and worn. It has open tears. The print is not entirely legible. Binding is admirably virile and in full body. Although the body of the book has cracks to the spine seams the book is firmly affixed with no loose pages. There are previous owner inscriptions on the frontispage. All pages are mottled, spotted and marked by age and storage. The back of the dictionary has been affected by damp storage conditions and resulted in staining to the back papers, bubbling and crispness to the texture. Consequently these pages are more delicate than the majority of the volume. The pages are cleanly trimmed. The trim edges are marked by age and storage. All pages are clear and complete. fk. Copy of Hubert Howe Bancroft. Bancroft's signature in pencil on front free endpaper: "H. H. Bancroft." Original publisher's brown cloth binding. 5 1/4" x 7 1/2." 288 pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are clean and intact except for very faint smudges on front cover. This book is listed in the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 4720. Mary Abigail Dodge (1833-1896) was an American author who wrote under the pen name, Gail Hamilton. A Battle of the Books is a book she anonymously wrote after negative experiences with the publisher, Ticknor and Fields. Problems began when she had learned that her royalty payment was less than average because she was a woman (she had learned Sophia Hawthorne, widow of Nathaniel Hawthorne, was having similar pay issues from publisher's as well). Dodge advocated for women's rights and also supported the abolition of slavery. Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was an American historian, publisher, bookseller, and ethnologist who published and collected books on British Columbia, Central America, and the western states of the U.S. including California, Texas, and Alaska. Bancroft had a vision to donate his personal library of approximately 60,000 books for the benefit of scholars. That vision was realized when the Bancroft Library, which is named after him, at UC Berkeley was founded in 1905 upon the acquisition of his book collection.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Jonas Hanway (1712-1786) was a merchant and philanthropist.  This is the first of several books by this resourceful traveler, best known as the “pioneer user” of the umbrella (Cox).  His trip down the Volga River was fraught with danger, including an armed robbery by bandits in Astrabad (in modern Russia) during a rebellion.  He later received 85% in restitution after the rebellion was quelled and the instigator (a rebel governor) put to death.  Once he returned to London from his trip in 1750, he filled several public positions, had a street in London named after him, and was posthumously honoured by a monument to him in Westiminster Abbey (Cox).  Curiously, Dr. Johnson is said to have harshly rebuked Hanway’s essay criticizing tea-drinking (DNB).
