WODEHOUSE, P. G. [ed. and preface by D.R. Bensen]
Women in Wodehouse [Plum's Peaches]

Imprint: NY, Barnes & Noble, c1991,1995
Binding: Hardcover

Quarter cloth binding lightly bumped at faintly sunned spine tail. Previous owner address label on front free endpaper pages 278 to rear endpaper have a single long crease as if pages bent at one time; no binding problems, pages clean and bright. Dust wrapper with creased flaps very lightly edgeworn.; This collection of 14 short stories (publication dates range from 1912-1950) was originally published as "Plum's Peaches". From the dust wrapper: "Think of Wodehouse and you think of Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, of Lord Emsworth, of Psmith, of Ukridge, of Mr. Mulliner, true enough. But, when you come down to it, what motivates these worthies (and unworthies)? Running after them, running from them, wooing them, placating them, rescuing them, being rescued by them-whenever a Wodhouse male goes into high gear, it almost always has something to do with a woman, and probably on too good for him at that.

The work of Pelhem Grenvill ("Plum") Wodehouse displays both a high respect and keen relish for women-from demure damsels to frenzied flappers, his female characters are usually saner than his men (which isn't saying much). Here is an orchard of Wodehouse peaches (and a lemon or two): fourteen short stories featuring the outrageous Bobbie Wickham, the three ex-wives of millionare Vincent Jopp, the extortionate Vera Prebble, the near lethal Celia Tennant, the abundantly ripe Maudie Wilberforce, Cleopatra herself reincarnate in Cora McGuffy Spottsworth, and a basketful more. For those for whom romance is not enough, the stories provide useful instruction on how to avoid dealing with fiery dragons, the consequences of multiple concurrent engagements, weight-loss and beauty tips, how to train a fiance, the perils of ambience, a surefire method for establishing a film career and detailed instructions on imitating a hen laying an egg (a personal fowl). Who could ask for more-if indeed as much?" This author described as "a staple of the comfort reading genre" by Jenny Colgan in an April 2020 article in "The Guardian"., 324 pages, Very Good in Very Good dust wrapper

Imprint: New York, Simon and Schuster, 1974
Edition: 1st American Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

Original publisher's blue cloth binding with multicolored illustrated dust wrapper. Silver foil decoration on front cover and silver foil lettering on spine of book. Dust wrapper illustrated by Osbert Lancaster. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4." 186 pages, complete. A couple pages in front list other books by P. G. Wodehouse. Back panel of dust wrapper shows a reprinted black and white photograph of P. G. Wodehouse in a study with his pet dog watching him nearby. Dust wrapper and pages and covers of book are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. No remainder marks. A fine book in a fine dust wrapper. From dust wrapper: "In Hollywood there is a little circle whose members have decided that the celibate life is best. They call themselves Bachelors Anonymous. Their methods are frankly borrowed from Alcoholics Anonymous. When one of them feels the urge to take a woman out, he seeks out the other members of the circle and tells them of his craving, and they reason with him. He pleads that one dinner cannot do him any harm, but they know what that one dinner can lead to. They point out the inevitable results of that first downward step. Once yield to temptation, and it is inevitable that one will soon stand cowering beside one's bride at the altar rail, racked with regret and remorse when it is too late. So when Ivor Llewellyn, a five-time loser in matrimony and the softest of targets for a female dinner companion, sets off for London, and his friends at Bachelors Anonymous realize that they have no London branch, they feel they have to Take Steps.".
